| wondering if someone has experienced this. Posting for a friends horse.
She saddled up and went for a walk up the road, not even 5 min, the horse (mare) 8yrs old was covered in white foam, this horse is in impecable shape. Her back legs were quivering in the hamstring area.
The only thing abnormal with her appearance is two big bulges on each of her flanks. Like the size of a large slow pitch soft ball. They are from the inside, not the skin, they are relatively soft, but cant feel if it is liquidy or not. They are not painful to squish or press on, and you cant feel them when you put your hand from the inside of the flank.
Has anyone had experience with this?
She is not lame, no temperature, is eating/drinking fine. She says she is urinating a bit more than usual but it doesnt smell and it is not discolored. She did lay down frequently at odd times of day the first day, but has been normal since.
She has her on for two days.. took her off today.. and penicillin.
Any ideas? or experiences? I have never seen it before. |

| Cheryl, I dont know what it is specifically, but she said it was normal for the mare. I was thinking tying up... she was thinking colic, but the colic didnt make sense with the big bumps on either side of the flank.? |

| The big bumps could be muscle spasm, from the horse tensing up from the colic.
Hard to say as I never seen them.
I would lean more towards tying up. If it has only been a few days, the vet could pull blood and test the ck level, if it is elevated, the horse tied up, if it is normal, probably not |

Location: Florida.. | sounds like mild tying up.. what feed is she on? and hay?she may revise that if her horse is prone to it.

| This is the first time it has happened. She took her out of the field, saddled, walked the 2acre fenceline to check it, and walked up the road 5min. After a week off.

Location: Gainesville, TX | Sounds like tying up, even the urination. I'd be getting her a PSSM exam, genetic and muscle biopsy. Feed changes are the best thing to help if she has it. |

| Not exactly the same experience, but I had a gelding that I was taking out to long trot. He started off a little "hot" metally and then about 1/4 mile into he stopped trotting and stopped completely. He was shaking and then was walking in really short steps. I took him back to the barn and he just stood there locked. I thought he was tying up. Next day he was fine.
Same thing happened a few days later. So I decided to take him to the vet. We pulled blood. Everything looked normal. No signs of him tying up. His body was pretty sore though. THe vet finally decided that it was a HORRIBLE shoe job and that he was all contracted and uneaven and so sore that his muscles were tensing up and causing him horrible pain. We pulled the shoes and let him go barefoot for a few weeks and the horse went back completely sound. |

| My old gelding did this one time, we were going from one race to another not too long after I ran him (It was only half hour away). I walked him out a little bit then threw him in the trailer to head over there, which we didn't think anything of since most of our friends were doing the same thing since the race was so close. When we got there he was covered in white foam and couldn't walk, he fell out of the trailer on to his side when he tried to move and seized his legs up repeatedly. After a few minutes, he stopped and got up and shook it off. Never did it again, but man it was freaky. He tested negative for both types of PSSM, too. We don't know if he tied up, had a seizure, muscle cramp or what but that was 7 years ago and haven't had a problem since.
Has this been an ongoing issue or was it a one time thing? |

| Only thing about the tying up, is she didnt get stiff, short strided or tense. I still think it probably was, but maybe a mild case. Still have not heard from her to see how the mare is doing.. Might have to crash her party tomorrow and go see... |
