Curious where your 3 year old futurity colts are that you are planning on entering in December at BFA (or something similar).

When do they need to start clocking against local 1D horses?

Since you cannot run in open barrel races and exhibition barrels are rarely in the same place as the open, it is really hard to judge, but you can get an idea by comparing to the 1D times.

A lot of the races here will do after exhibitions and they leave them on the stakes, which is great!

When do you really start asking these 3 year olds? When should they be really "running"?

Currently mine is on her winter break still and will be brought back out to get started on the barrels in a couple months. She was started as an early 2 yr old and spent all last year just getting more and more broke and exposed to new things. She hasn't been started on the pattern yet, but I feel pretty confident that with how broke she has become it will be easy to get her going. This will be my first year preparing one for the Juvenile though so who knows if my steps are "wrong" or "right". I'd be curious to hear what others say on this.

This will be our first time to do the futurities. Our 3 year old is loping the pattern and being hauled to exhibitions. Planning to start asking for speed in a couple of months. We aren't shooting for the BFA but possibly some smaller ones.

Mine had 30 days put on last fall, was ridden a hand ful of times through the winter. He is very broke and started right so should be easy to pattern him. Just waiting for some nice weather to stick around steady like.

From what Iv gathered most people have them loping right now, will ask for a little more speed later in the spring and then give them a break during the summer. Bring them back in the late summer and see how they are doing.

This is right where mine is at! However, I will haul her this summer to rodeos for that exposure.....just wasn't sure when I should really start asking for speed and make a run.

I would love to know where my 3 year old futurity horse is at... I'm still looking for her

My four year old that I plan to futurity at 5 is currently being ridden through cows, learning to stand at the trailer without hanging herself, and just getting more broke (came off the track in October). I won't start her on the pattern until our snow is gone and the outdoor arena is dry and ready to practice in. Once they're as broke as I like them, and confident in their movements, the pattern part comes easy.
