So my baby was finally born on Sunday. The stallion is a quarter horse that is paint approved. The mare is a registered paint. Do I register the baby as a paint, a quarter horse, or both? She's a solid palomino with a wide blaze that goes around both nostrils. She has two white stockings. Do I have to DNA test the foal and mare? Do I have to have anything signed by the stallion owner b/c she lives in Australia? She said she has released the breeding certificate, not quite sure what that means...

Call APHA and they can walk you through everything. Your colt cannot be registered as an AQHA unless your mare is double registered AQHA/APHA.

You will register as a paint. The stallion owner is required to fill out a report to the registration organization saying what mares the stallion was bred to. If all fees are satisfied, then the breeder's certificate is released. You should contact APHA regarding the mare's status. Most mares are required to have DNA on file and parentage verified before foals can be registered out of them. Because the mare is not AQHA you will not be able to register the foal as AQHA.

It sounds like the stallion owner is sending you the "Breeders Certificate" for your baby, hopefully it will be the APHA certificate. Then follow the instructions on the certificate, take your pictures of the baby & send in with the fees!!

Good Luck!!!

The stud owner did not promise you a pre-printed breeding certificate ....... she clicked the release box on her studs APHA breeding report to allow you to fill out a standard registration form for your foal without her doing anything.

Your mare is already APHA so she is on record at APHA ... I would send front and back copies of her registration along with the foals registration form since the stud is in Australia.

You will need a current APHA membership ... since stud is in Australia I would do a parentage verification DNA test on the foal. (costs the same as a breeding DNA test)

Don't sit around ... fill out your papers correctly and send them in and start the processing ... if any problems should come up ... you will not get hit with any increases in registration fees due to age of foal if you sit around and do nothing the fees will continue to increase as foal gets older ... you can print registration forms off of the APHA site ..

As someone that went through this process last year, I would use APHA's website to handle your registration. The website will walk you through the process. It is incredibly fast and my registration fees ended up being significantly less than stated on my breeders certificate. Good luck.

That means she released any hold on the registration of the foal to register online. You probably won't get a paper breeders certificate. You will need a membership and to log on to the APHA website to complete the application online. You will need a pic of each side, front and back of the horse, plus any special pictures to show marking details to upload in the appropriate spots.

I assume since your foal is by a stallion in Australia, you must have bred with frozen semen? If so, you will have to order a parentage verification kit when you apply for registration. APHA can't complete the registration until the DNA results are complete.

The stallion was in Oklahoma at the time of the breeding. She was A.I.'d with cooled semen. Thanks for the info :)

Here's a pic of my sweet filly, Farrah.
