I'm on the fence about selling my little 2 horse trailer to upgrade to a 3 horse, but in the event that it doesn't sell I want to invest a little into it. It's in great shape other than some surface rust in a few places and the diamond plate needs a good buffing and to be resealed in some areas. Unfortunately I'm not very good at doing these things myself.

I'll try and attach a picture of the silver bullet.

My idea is to remove the diamond plate completely so I don't have to worry about resealing it constantly, then have the entire lower half of the trailer rock guarded. Has anyone done this before? Is it better or worse than diamond plate? Is it expensive? I have yet to find a place here in Kamloops that will do my horse trailer (they do vehicles only) so I haven't gotten an accurate quote yet.

OK... I had to Google "rock guarded" to see what you were asking... Most people are more worried about the horses IN the trailer.... I suggest you get a 25 year old POS with a good floor and stop worrying about it.. But, if you see or hear rocks and have a beautiful trailer, slow down... It's like driving on snow or ice... The finish you would have to provide would cost more than the trailer. Even the Space Shuttle loses tiles to hail...

What?

This trailer is structurally sound. The floor is all new, the matts are new the lights are new, the tires are new.

I want to ROCK GUARD (Paint) the lower half to prevent surface rust.

This trailer is not "junk" and the cost of a full paint job is $1600 (Paint, not rock guard), so this trailer is worth far more than the cost of a little maintenance work.

Look up Monstaliner.com They have several do it yourself kit's and offers it in colors. It should only cost 150.00 in material to do your trailer.

I'm not sure if I would pull the diamond plate off to put some type of coating on in its place.  If the coating gets nicked, and it will, you can get moisture up under it and it may cause problems.  I would look in to acid washing the aluminum because it will do a better job protecting your trailer than any type of rock guard coating I have seen.

Good advice, the plate is there for a good reason, the coating will not work as good as the plate infact the coating will chip.

That's a pretty cool trailer. I'd leave the diamond plate on too.

What you are seeing is a galvanic affect of two different metals creating an electrical current and growing the protective oxide on the aluminum at a faster rate and thicker which gives it the off color.

If you APPLY ANYTHING OTHER THAN WATER ... like an acid wash ... IT WILL TURN INTO PURE OLD FASHIONED CORROSION and eat everything up .. you would have a battery shaped like a trailer .. lol

If the aluminum is easy to remove ... you can paint the steel with a good paint and then put some of the 6 ml black plastic they use as a water barrier on concrete foundations for houses as a barrier between the AL and steel ... plus you could acid wash the aluminum while it is off ...

Right now all you can do is buff the aluminum to shine with a car type of buffing compound and then wax it to make it shine longer ....

The aluminum IS YOUR ROCK GUARD ...
