I have a horse with a swollen hock. Very swollen. No heat. And not lame. I've been putting cold water on it. I've tried BOT hock wraps. Still very swollen and just can't figure it out.

The swelling is more to the front inside of the left hind leg.

have you tried walking him to see if the swelling goes down since you say he's not lame?

anything in turn out to kick hocks on? could be like a capped hock. And is it "mushy" or hard?

I would be checking for Thrush, it can cause some swelling.

Put ice on it for 15 minutes a day for three days. Then start using the BOT.

Don't want to scare you and I've only dealt with it one time, my mare came in with a hugely swollen hock, not overly hot and sound on it. Called my vet who recommended cold hose and bute until we could get her in (of course happened on a Saturday). Swelling went down by Monday morning, but then she was slightly lame on it. By Wednesday when he could see her it had a small little puff on the front of it. She passed a flexion test 3 times on it, pinned her ears the whole time but trotted off sound every time. Doc decided to take a look at the swelling, it was clear fluid with a tiny bit of blood in it. He talked me into one x-ray view of it, said he would pay for it if it came back clean. Fractured. Right thru the patty shaped bones in the hock. Tens unit for a month and penned. Then turn out for 6 months, took her back in, it was healed, gave her another 4 months off and never looked back.

Are you sure it isn't a bog spavin? Google it and you should find pics. If it is a vet will need to drain it and inject steroids to get it to go down.

I'd get a vet out. A gelding I sent for roping training was there three weeks and the trainer kept saying he may be a little bit off. I decided after third week of this "him being off" Wed go get him.

Hock was the size of a basketball (how the guy missed that is beyond me) he walked on it fine and it was only warm to the touch so we cold hosed and got the vet out the next day. We took X-ray's and there was seven various fractures to the hock. Best guess he took an upward kick from another horse.

Bad news was he was give a one percent chance he'd be sound again and he would never be rideable. Good news was his owner is a crazy woman who wrapped the leg for an entire year followed by months of rehab. He defied all odds and is sound and is being ridden as a pleasure type horse.
