| I have a 3 yo, super sweet nice mare & Randomly she will just turn into a bronc bucking fit, lunging, jumping off all 4 feet, nervousness bit chomping. Did it tonight yet rode absolutely fabulous all last week. I got off and lunged her til she was tired, didnt buck on the lunge line but as soon as i sat on her again she started swishing her tail. Not a mean mare whatsoever. She's been in heat this past week so wondering if ovarian cysts could be a cause? Anyone have similar issues? Teeth were done 3 months ago, kept turned out 24/7, has had a precautionary epm treatment also.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I would be checking my saddle to make sure its fitting her right and make sure the tree is not broken or there no screws backing out, check and make sure blanket is not to stiff or rubbing anywhere and cinch. I always start with the simple things...Check teeth again.. Check bit to make sure its not pinching |

| JMOH, I would have her overies looked at. I have had sore overies in one of my mares who competed hard. Won't hurt to have her looked at. |

Have an ultrasound done then you'll know if it's hormonal. I hope it's not but you'll have plenty of options to treat her. |

| Please please please please please test for PSSM type 1 and 2!!! Same deal with mine and she has type 2!!! |

Location: Brady, Texas | I just took my 3 yr old to the vet for same thing in an exhibition. Started swishing her tail and trying to buck during her exhibitions. I found out she was going into heat every 5 days. Her right ovary was very enlarged and had to be sewn up a couple inches, it looked as if she had a baby. She did not act like a lot of mares do, she has been moody, but no nickering, squeeling, kicking exct.. at other horses. The vet insterted a marble in her and after about a week, she has been like a different horse. I have hauled her a few times since then and she is working really comfortably and nice now. |

| Checked saddle pad/saddle, rides in a chain mouthpiece and doesn't act ouchy in her mouth but I will get that looked with the ovaries also. So frustrating! |

| Ovaries are a cheap check...definately a great place to start. I had the same issue..but worse. It was ovaries first and then uclers later. Let us know! |

| I was hurt very badly because of ovarian cysts in a mare that I had. I'm not a mare person but, this was one of my favorite horses I've ever owned. I placed at some WPRA rodeos on her and she was a 1D/2D horse at any jackpot. She was my back up rodeo horse (she was also a bad bleeder and I had a gelding at the time that was my main rodeo horse). I ran her from the time she was 6 years old until she was 14 with absolutely no issues pertaining to this. Then, from the age of 14 to 16 she bucked during a run on 3 different occasions with absolutely no explanation. I had vets go over her from head to tail and nothing was found. We checked for everything from kissing spine to neurologic issues. Then, in 2011 while running home from the 3rd barrel she bucked so hard there was no way I was staying on. I came off and hit the wall at the end of the arena. I had 6 broken bones, a puntured lung and brain bleed. While I was in the hospital, a friend asked me if I had checked her ovaries. I hadn't so, once I got out of the hospital and was able, I took her for an ultrasound. Among other things, I was told there was scar tissue from what appeared to be an ovarian cyst having popped. After cleaning things up on her ovaries and although it took some time, I was able to get her in foal and I now have a 3 year old out of her. So, the point of my story is YES this is absolutely something that can cause intermittant bucking and YES, it's extremely painful for them. |
