It has been 10 days since I found my barrel gelding with a torn eyelid that had happened at least 4 days before I found it. It was deformed and not quite covering the eye. I called the vet and he recut the eyelid and restitched it so it was more normal lid. I have been almost hysterical the past week and have taken my horse back for a recheck and he took a loose stitch out of the geldings eye and said it looked better, this was last Thursday 3 days ago. Everytime I go to put medication in the eye he keeps it closed and clear tears drop from his eye, I believe he is hurting and I don't know whether to take him back to the local vet or call an equine ophthalmologist, I had one barrel horse go blind with uveitis in one eye and cataract in the other, it is all I can do right now to keep it together, I am a nurse practitioner and I believe we should sedate him and put some florescence in his eye and check for corneal ulcer or abrasion, I am so frightened that I am immobilized. Local vets can do that, cant they?

I took my last horse to Memphis to see equine opthamologist and then to LSU to Dr. Storey that was department head. Anyone have any ideas It has been 10 years since I traveled that route.

My rope horse hit his eye on something in the pasture one night, the lid was swollen shut and bloody but the lid was not torn just really swollen. The vet came out and did check for an ulcer with the fluorescent stuff. The ulcer was over 3/4 of his eye, so yes a vet can do that :) The vet also told us to kind of push the lid along the eye and kind of under the bone... It's a little gross to feel but it worked and he couldn't close his eye while the medicine was being put on his eye.

Check and make sure that non of the stiches are poking his eyeball,  A friend of mine had a mare did this and had to have her eye lid stiched back together, but the mare would not open her eye and was tearing really bad so I looked at it for her and saw that a stich were it was tied off was poking her took her back and our vet fixed it so it would not be poking her and then she healed up just fine.. Look at his stiches real good...

You don't necessarily need a boarded ophthalmologist to do that but you do need a good equine vet. Staining the eye and treating a potential ulcer doesn't require a specialist but it does require a competent equine vet who's dealt with them before.

you would do a fluorescein stain to check the eye for stain uptake and then based on the character of the ulcer, if there is one, you can treat either by putting meds topically with a tube or you can have the vet put an SPL in. That is more convenient and allows for frequent treatments without the fight. But that's all if there's an ulcer. Which based on the squinting and tearing I wouldn't be shocked.

Can you give her some Banamine just to help with pain? May make doctoring her easier at least.

I went the route with a regular vet.got into a few thousands of dollars before we had to have the eye removed.i suggested an opthalmologist to save time on the eye and money out of pocket.I will say anytime something big happens though I head straight to a specialist so I may be overly anxious.

We bad just a small eye boo boo with Two, and I was freaking out--I just KNEW she was gonna be blind. . . . So I cannot imagine how worried and upset I'd be in your situation. Sending up a prayer for you and your boy. (I'm one of those that go overboard and imagine the worst possible scenario at every turn.)

Definitely you need to stain and assess for abrasions or ulcers.  If there appears to be  infection the vet needs to do a culture to determine if it is bacterial, viral or fungal so that you are not wasting time and money treating with the wrong medications.
