I am trying to breed a mare that is not sound to run. She is a nice, athletic mare by Tres Seis.
I do not have plans to get into breeding, just trying to make the best of this situation.
She was bred (ai'd) in April and did not take. She was bred again on the 1st. Good repro vet involved.
Is this normal for a maiden? I am starting to stress about this...

All these years I've only paid attention to the stud fee - haha! Oh well, I am starting to understand the cost of babies a little better!

I hate to tell you this, but I had $2,000 in vet fees last year for one mare. So far this year, one breeding cycle was $540. I keep asking myself why I do it; insanity I guess.

If you are from the frozen tundra states your first heat cycle would be like
your mare. Just keep in mind first cycles are weak and usually false so you
wait on the next cycle to inseminate ...

Southern states are 4-6 weeks earlier than your mare's cycles but you use
the same routine and skip the first cycle.

Weird weather changes from freezing to hot can and will affect your mares
cycling to quick or slower cycles.

IMO most misses are created by text book vets who wants the semen to
arrive as the mare is coming into her 6 hour ovulation window which is
very easy to miss.

Seven years ago I changed my CS shipment to arrive 24 hours before vet sez
mare will ovulate. Good quality Semen will live inside the mare for 48-60 hours.
This gives all the swimmers a chance to line up and be ready for the egg to show
up. .. lol .. Of course I inseminate as soon as CS arrives and also give the mare
a shot of lutalyse to assist in bringing her into full bloom.

I do not check mare until 18-20 days when embryo is much larger and easier to
see on a scope. If empty then at that time you can see where the mare is in
her next cycle.

If she checks in foal ... I do not take her back for heartbeat checks and other
nonsense ... the first 90 days is the most critical to the embryo getting
detached and absorbed. The less digging around in there the better!!

My rate of getting mares pregnant on the first shipment has been 100% using
this 24 HOURS PRIOR to guesstimated ovulation along with the shot.

NOTE:
If stud collection is on M W F and mare may ovulate on Sunday or Monday ..
I order the CS to arrive on Friday or Saturday and inseminate immediately.
It is better to have the semen and lutalyse working than wasting an
entire cycle by mare ovulating over a weekend.

GOOD LUCK ..!!

Who are you breeding your nice mare to??
(PM me)

I had 5500 into my mare and she lost the embryo.. I just can't afford to do it anymore.

Two years ago, I bred one mare to a local stallion. $500 SF, $100 in mare care, and got a really nice baby. I may repeat this next year. The vet fees are ridiculous.

Well now I know! I have had to leave her for a few days every time and then vet drives all the way to airport for semen - and he's expensive on routine stuff :/
Just the "farm" charge and shipping are unbelieveable. Good grief, I'm going back to buying 2 yr olds! I had no idea!

I do my own airport running or FedEx running.  I have stories of interesting parking jobs at Dulles International at 2:30 am picking up semen!  Lucky my truck was still there when I got back . .

Picking the stallion and paying the fees is the absolute easiest part of breeding!  LOL!  From there is gets stressful and really expensive.  An easy breed (first time success) and healthy birth 11 mos and 11 days later will still run about another grand.  But good luck on that scenario.  I've had it happen maybe twice or 3 times in 18 years of breeding.

Here's hoping your second try with your mare is successful and all goes well afterward!!

And yes, shopping and buying 2yo's sounds really good after breeding/foaling season is over every year!!

Budget for 3 attempts .... Pray for one ????

Was a culture done before you started breeding?

2 attempts is not abnormal. The timing has to be just right and that can get tricky with some stallions schedules. I wont ship semen anymore. Im over that stress and frustration lol.
