I ride in a 3/4" 5 Star with wither relief.... My saddle fits perfectly without the pad so it's just there for shock absorbtion/etc.
My thoughts on this pad are: This thick of a pad will make your saddle fit much much tighter. So if your saddle is too wide or you have a growing colt, etc that you don't want to buy different saddles for maybe this would be an option for you. I would be concerned about rolling but maybe it would work out for you? I am unsure of your saddle situation or why you are asking about this thick of a pad but my only guess is your saddle is too wide and you can't afford to trade, etc to get one that fits your horse. Everyone's situations are different and sometimes it's easier to buy a thicker pad, shim, etc.
Remember: Wool is a natural material. It is naturally moisture wicking and naturally shock absorbing. This means you don't necessarily need a thick pad to get the shock absorbtion or "cushion" you are looking for.
Because wool is naturally wicking lots of riders choose to line their pad to prevent the sweat from wicking into the pad. This isn't necessary but it does extend the life of the pad... however, with this thick of a pad AND a liner.... Your saddle is going to fit significantly different than if it was just on top of a 3/4" or even 1/2" pad...

| Yes but only under our roping saddles. And that being said we’d probably back off to a 1” if we needed to order another pad. We like them under our horses with a little more wither. We have one horse who is more mutton withered and saddles get a little rolly on him with that thick of a pad. Any close contact feel you might have in your seat is gone, but for hard hitting steers it’s a fair trade off.
No way I would try to put one under a barrel saddle, I don’t feel that barrel saddle trees are built to accommodate that much pad the way roping trees seem to be.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Man thats alot of pad, the only ones I know that use this much pad are calf ropers and team ropers, they need the extra support, but never heard of a barrel saddle needing that much thickness. |

| So here is the situation... I have a saddle that was an anniversary gift. (dont really want to trade it and hurt any feelings) Its just a tad wide where it sits on the sholders. I ride a 7/8 currently. Maybe I should give a 1 inch a try instead. However I did just discover that 5 star has the velcro saddle shims so I ordered one in hopes this will fix my issue :)

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I have a 3/4” and two 1” Five Star pads... my husband ordered one of the 1” pads as a gift, and I would have greatly prefered it to have been a 3/4”. I’ve actually thought about selling off one or both of the 1” pads to get another 3/4”. They’re both nearly brand new, but they’re just too thick for my horses builds and my saddles. Less is definitely more in this situation, in my opinion. |

| I had an 1 1/8 pad at one point. Got it for like $75 from a friend. It was a monster of a pad. I don't think I'll ever order one, that's for sure. I'm not a roper!
I currently use a 1 inch on my gelding with huge high withers. It's more than enough to accommodate for that, under a treeless, so it helps for support as well.
My other 5 stars are 3/4 and 7/8. Those are more than plenty for a good fitting saddle. |

| I just ordered a saddleright pad!! Excited to try it! My main reason for that investment is hopefully it will last 20 years like every one else's does. LOL I have always ridden 5 stars and replaced them every couple years when they start to compress. Maybe won't have to do that now. LOL |

Location: NW MT | I never recommend a customer get a 1 1/8" thick - that pad was originally developed for ropers since so many think they have to double pad, Mike decided to offer the 1 1/8" to hopefully get them to just use one pad. The thicker you go, the more chance of saddle roll too. I usually even try to steer people away from the 1" too. With these pads not "squishing" down, you can easily end up with too much pad & a too tight fit. 3/4" & 7/8" are definitely the most popular thicknesses.
As far as them compressing, I've yet to see one that didn't "bounce back" after washing. I have one customer that trains & has literally used & abused his for years. They will look like they are done for but he power washes them & lets them dry & it always amazes me how nice they look afterwards. |
