| What is the best and affordable horse insurance? I am looking to cover three horses. Two are performance horses and one is an upcoming yearling in May. If location plays a part, I am located in Central Oklahoma. Also, what are the different types of isurance and be best for my situation. Thank you for any advice and recommandations. |

Location: Texas | I learned about this company on BHW. I just got coverage for one colt, and will be using them when my other policies are up for renewal. http://www.broadstoneequine.com/ |

| I've used Markel for 6 years now. Never had to file a claim but did call and give them the heads up when my mare coliced, in case she needed surgery. The lady I spoke with was so nice. The last thing at that time on my mind was insurance on her until the vet asked me if she was insured. I pray I never have to use the insurance policy on the mare I have covered now but Im sure glad to have it. |

| Hi, Contact Rosie Bradley. She is on fb or I can pm you her #. She is great with finding insurance for your horses. I have a Firewater Ta Fame fut prospect who I needed insured & Rosie got the filly insured for what my trainer & I felt she was worth. Rosie was wonderful to work with. I am also in okla. Rosie is in Tx. She was the only person who would insure Abbie for what she is really worth. |

I also use Markel. This is the first time I've insured so they were very helpful. I've heard pros/cons but until I have a bad experience I will stick with them. I'm probably going to be insuring 2 more with them in the near future. |

Location: Iowa | It all depends on what kind of coverage you want on your horses and what you classify as affordable. I am an independent agent in Iowa and we write a lot of equine insurance through Markel. Markel has a basic mortality coverage with emergency colic surgery but also offers optional coverages such as: international transit, stallion infertility, permanent disability, and major medical. Most performance horses carry mortality and major medical. We have some that carry permanent disability and a couple of stallion infertility polices for your more expensive horses and/or breeding programs. The basic mortality with emergency colic surgery usually is a low percentage of the insured value, but can vary depending on your colic limit requested. The added optional coverages can add up quite quickly but for the right horse can be a necessity. Our office does require a signed and dated vet examination every year. Our insureds complete the value they want on the horse during the application process. If they want to increase the limit mid-year, there is a simple proof of value form that they need to complete to show proof of winnings, training, etc. Another cheaper option for your yearling, could be to looking into your homeowner’s insurance. We add quite a few low-cost horses to insured homeowners’ policies. The homeowners will provide the basic perils (lightning, collision, drowning, tornado) This route defiantly does not provide as much coverage as an actually equine policy but is usually significantly cheaper. Some other nationwide equine insurance companies are Plains Horizon, Wilkin’s Livestock or Great American. Hope this helps! Just be sure to really talk with your agent to know exactly what perils are covered and how to handle an emergency euthanization process.

Location: Northern CA | Markel. I have used them for years, have had a major medical claim and a mortality. Great and easy to work with. They even covered the stem cell for my yellow horse. |

Location: South Georgia | I use Lisa at Star H Insurance. The policy is underwritten by The Hartford. I went with this company because they had no minimum coverage amounts, and the major medical coverage did not cap out at the value of the horse. For example, if the horse was insured for $5000, I could still get $10,000 in major medical coverage. As expensive as vet work is, I found this to be a major bonus. The rates were low and customer service was great and prompt. I had SEVERAL major medical claims in the first year and the checks for reimbursement were issued within 24 hours...seriously! One check was received in the mail 3 days after the claim was filed. It's unreal. Kim Briggs is the lady at the Hartford that you call for claims. They have not questioned anything and have been generous. I have had a great experience. |
