Say you've got a horse that's headed to the vet to get his teeth done, and you want some X-rays of the hock just to see how it's looking in there.  How many would you get and at what angle is best?  Trying to do this on a budget....The horse is sound, but hasn't had much care/upkeep so I want an idea if I should inject or just start on a joint supplement.  Thanks in advance for the input!!

If I don't trust a vet enough to pick views/number of shots.... I would would go to a different vet.
Explain why you want the hocks checked and let them take it from there.  Just make sure you have a good performance horse vet.

I would get at least 4.  But your horse can radiograph perfect and still need injections.  If you were wanting it on a budget, why not let him to a lameness exam to see if he needs injected?

I guess I'd just like to SEE if there's any arthritis.
Dad is saying skip the X-rays and just inject. :S
I guess I could opt for the lameness exam.....

Most veterinarians have a standard price for a hock series, and this usually includes 4 views.  It's always better to do all 4 views because some views can show things that another view wont.  I am a big fan of x-raying when your budget allows rather than just injecting.  It's good to get a baseline of what your horse looks like right now so you have something to compare to down the road.

If it were me, I would get him flexed and evaluated by a good lameness vet. If he shows any soreness, do the injection(s). If there is anything suspicious then do xrays to see what is going on.

Unless you have mucho dinero and then just do the xrays along with the flexion tests

Our mare had a major kicking incident in my trailer.  Whe was only slightly sore, but a little puffy.  Decided to xray and there was a crack in the outermost bone.  My vet charged a flat fee for 5, and a little more for each extra.

On that day however, they could not get a good view because it was not displaced and very very hairline and hard to see.  I was getting sick at my stomach counting the "extras" but he said it was his fault and didn't charge me for the extra pic's.

We x-rayed again 8 months later to give me peace of mind before we started legging her back up.  Same thing.

If there are no problems and I just wanted them as like a baseline, I would trust the vet.  There are things that won't show up on an xray.

Four views are best and standard with of the lameness vets I've used and worked for. There is a lateral or dorsal plantar, lateral to medial and lateral oblique, medial oblique.
I had a mare running off at the first barrel and she flexed sound, lateral, medial views showed a decent joint. The oblique picked up the bone spur that was causing her to run up the fence. Mind you she had had several exams by several vets, multiple flexion, xrays. It just took the right vet with the right angle to find it.
