Location: Tennessee | Just curious if you put them on front and back, or only front/back? I have used them before about 2 years ago and I believe my farrier put sidewinders on the front and rims on the back. From what I remember my gelding worked great in them. |

| I imagine that it not only depends on the way your horse works but also the type of ground you run in.
My good,old rodeo mare and the mare I am running now are both 4WD style turning horses....no butt dragging. Since I mainly rodeo we get ground from nearly untouched race tracks to deep sand, with a lot of harder type ground in between. Both these mares did/do well with sidewinders all the way around....they need the traction. For a horse that drags it's butt to/around a barrel you could be looking at lameness issues if you put them on the hind.
Most people I know only use them in the front. |

| Sidewinders are shoes that were designed specifically for Rodeo events, with the main emphasis on Barrel Racing. The side notched design was developed for a wide variety of event surfaces by farrier Richard Dunivant and the shoe is produced by Thoro'Bred Inc. The shoe has reduced the times in approximately 80% of those who have run them. Most will run them up front only, especially if there is a slipping issue in the turns. They can be run on the hinds to address the same issue if it is present. The Sidewinder is also available in the Leg Saver option, a natural rubber pad that is vulcanized onto the aluminum to reduce shock and the risk of sole bruising during the event.
Not to get too far off subject, but another Barrel Racing setup that is having great success with some of the top horses and riders is the Silver Queen up on the fronts and the World Racing Plate Hind on the hinds. This is an excellent setup if there is not an issue with the horse slipping in the turns.
