I rescued a 2 year old filly a few months ago because she was starving and owner had to move ASAP. Shes a cute sweet little appendix filly with no papers yet has had tons of ground work, saddled, jumps in any trailer, nothing bugs her, she will walk over tarps etc etc etc. Would make someone a great project.

BUT even though I have stated she has no papers everyone keeps asking, is she papered whats her pedigree etc. Then when I respond back that she is un papered they dissapear.

So flustrating! Only asking a couple hundred, and I think even if I gave her away I might even have the same issue. Anyone else having this issue?

Back when I listed my rescue palomino colt, I was asked the same thing.....even said I'm not sure who he is out of etc......I even had a guy (very well known horse trader around here) make a $50 offer on him and say that I need to call "aqha" and see if I can track down papers on him before he bought him......I was dumbfounded that 1) he is an idiot, and 2) I clearly stated in the add he is GRADE, no papers, zilch, nada. zero papers on him!

that is the reason they dissappear ,if someone takes a chance on her and she does not make an outstanding horse then you have to try to sell her again, and if shes not  a top horse you dont paid for your time

It's frustrating that there are so many uneducated buyers out there. But that's a huge problem with the market right now, everyone can afford to buy a horse. And I mean everyone. Even those people that have no business owning a horse. It drives me crazy to see all of these people looking to buy something for nothing, or wanting to sell nothing for something!

As for the problem with the unregistered horse, I think this is very common. With the flooded market it is just as easy to buy a horse with papers as it is one without, and the potential future value of a horse with papers is just so much higher. Not saying that there's anything wrong with your horse or unregistered horses in general, just looking at it based on the current market.

Your filly would be more marketable if she were started under saddle. But even then, the value just isn't going to be there because of the lack of papers. Wish I had something more positive to say about your situation, but I think that this is the sad reality. We recently purchased a papered horse for a couple hundred dollars. He also needed some groceries because someone had apparently forgotten to feed him. But I can honestly say the only reason we decided to take a chance on him was because we knew that we could make our money back on him in a year or so. And if he didn't have papers we wouldn't have even considered purchasing him because the potential future value wouldn't have been enough to justify owning him.

Editing to Add - I just re-read this and realized I might have come across as calling you uneducated! Definitely not what I meant. What I was referring to was all of the people who keep asking how your horse is bred, even though you clearly state she is grade.

I know she would be more marketable as started. But to me she is only 14 hands and just going to turn 3 this year. So she is to little for me personally to start. But if I end up having her through the spring and she grows enough then I already have plans to get on her to help the process. I just wish I could find her a home now! Id be willing to give her to the right home that wont starve her again. But wont advertise her that way!

there are "uneducated" buyer and sellers.

everybody has there own opinions about the use of papers.

called the other day about a 19yo gelding where the ad said "does not come with papers". that could be taken all sorts of ways.
so when i asked if they ever had papers on him, they said no, which is fine, but then said didnt think it was a big issue since it was a gelding.
when i mentioned age verification they 100% acted like they had never thought of that.

Yes, I learned my lesson the hard way about advertising horses as free to good home. That poor horse would have been better off if we'd have euthanized her. Maybe if you keep advertising your horse at the lower price the right person will come along and you can negotiate a lower price if necessary. Typically the market gets a little better in the spring when people have more time to spend with a new horse.

I hadn't even thought about age verification when a horse did not have papers, very good point.

two of my best horses are grade. i only have one papered barrel horse. but the other two are both pretty nice for being grade. my grade gelding can run a 21 second pole pattern and 2d 3d local barrel races. i just love him! he can run a better pole pattern than my papered out the butt horse lol. although they weren't near as pricey as the registered. but still run great!

My guyz have papers somewhere in a box at a house in KY where the past owners dad lived before he passed. Widow has not gone thru things but says is she finds them she will pass them on to me....I am not holding my breath on that one. So my boyz are paperless and still turning barrels and making me happy.

I would try to advertise her as GRADE rather than appendix and make sure to indicate in capital letters even, "NOT PAPERED, NO PAPERS AVAILABLE". This won't stop all the idiots from calling but it will stop some.

It has been my experience that every Tom, Dick and Harry with a leggy unpapered baby advertises them as appendix. In my mind appendix indicates that there is some proof of pedigree. Grade gives no reference to breed specifics.

I think people looking for just a good trail horse are more inclined to buy a horse without papers.  At least I know when we were looking for my husband's last trail horses we didn't care about papers because the horse just needed to be able to carry him around the woods no real special skills.  BUT most people looking for a good trail horse aren’t looking to buy a young horse to work with, feed, and break to be a trial horse.

Where barrel racers and people who compete in other events are more willing to buy a young unbroken horse because they want to do the training and or think they can get more horse for their money if it is younger and unbroken.  They still want some sort of evidence that a horse could have potential in that event.  So if they are too young to judge by conformation, or experience.  Then they want a pedigree to show they may have the potential.

I think if she was at least broke you might be able to sell her as a trail horse.  but unbroke and unregistered is hard....  I understand the size and age issue, just saying you may be stuck with her till later when she is broke..
