Location: Royal J Performance Horses, AZ | So I like to have shavings in my trailer when I haul to make it more comfortable for the horses.
However it never fails, my gelding will urinate in the trailer EVERY time with in 30 seconds of loading him. It's like he holds it just so he can pee in the shavings.
So my question is what do you do to keep your trailer floor in good repair and clean? Urine is obviously acidic and over time can break down wood and other materials and im at a loss as to how to keep my floors/mats from being ruined. what kind of floors do you have? Wood, aluminum, steel ETC. Which one is worst or best? |

Location: Texas | Our trailer has a treated wood floor in it so that it's waterproof and we have our mats on top of that. Every other time or so that we haul, we pull the mats out, hose them off, and rinse off the floor in the trailer.

Location: Displaced Iowegian | When we get to our destination, we clean out the wet spots (and poo) and respread the shavings. After two or three trips, we clean out all of the shavings, pull mats, wash down the floor and let dry. We have an aluminum floor. |

Location: Desert Land | I used to have the treated wood floors. I don't haul far or much, so I don't put a bunch of shavings. I usually rake out soiled shavings and manure after every use and then pull the mats and do a complete clean out about every 6 months.
I just got a new to me aluminum floor and just did a complete scrub down and will keep an eye on it to decide when to do another. |

Location: Roping pen | We put down several pounds of baking soda. Theory is that this neutralizes the urine. It appears to be working.
We also rhino lined our last trailer floor thinking that would help also but it didn't. Where/when we didn't put down the soda, it appears that the urine went thru liner and made it bubble up causing corrision. We just traded trailers and don't plan to rhino line this one---just use soda every chance we get.
Also, my #1 does the same thing. We are in the process of everytime we load him and he starts, we back him out hoping that he does outside. Jury is still out on that one.....some times he still goes and sometimes he doesn't..........
This is an aluminum floor.

| We have a WERM floor in our trailer, and I won't ever buy another one without it. I used to put shavings in our trailer, but someone suggested I try the pellets and I really like them a lot better than shavings. I spread them in the trailer then hose them down a little to get them to break apart. The urine kind of clumps so it's easier to clean it out, and it's much easier to pick through than shavings. |

Location: Kansas | My trailer has an aluminum floor.....with rubber mats. I always haul with two bags of shavings I lay out, and keep an extra in the dressing room. I frequently clean out the trailer because my mare does the same....pees as soon as she gets in the trailer LOL.
And once every two months I strip the trailer out, pull the mats out and hose it off really good then throw everything back on there. |

Our trailer already had it when we bought it, so I don't know what it costs. But it is really worth it. Cleaning my trailer is so easy, I just scrape out all of the pellets/shavings, get the hose and rinse. Doesn't take any time at all. |
