i have a 7 yr old toast ta dash mare that is THE BOMB. she can get down and work...... when no one is around.

i took her to a bigger barrel race tuesday and she worked like CRAP!! not because she didnt know how to work but because she was looking at everything that she wasnt supposed to be..

any suggestions on what to do? or do i just have to bite the bullet and keep on till she gets used to things?

Sounds like she just needs to be hauled and exposed more. You could always buy a few exhibtions before you run her and use those to let her have a feel for the arena.

They call it seasoning for a reason :)

Of course they are going to look and act stupid.  It's all new to them.  And Toast horses are usually pretty on the muscle.  Just patience and a lot of hauling.

Agreed, it's seasoning. The more you haul and expose the better. Right now it's all new and scary and distracting but with time it will become routine.

Good luck!

At this point, I almost feel like you should be time onlying and only making one run. I dunno, it's tricky. You need to make it so her first run is her best run, know what I mean? But it sucks hauling somewhere just to time only. But it's cheaper than entering!

I try to just slow lope or even trot one pattern and then ask them to run the 2nd one. Usually the second one they will get the point and look where their supposed to. If they dont I just keep hauling and going slow until they get it. Once they can slow lope without looking around I just start running the first time.

I start at smaller events to get their confidence, then gradually go to larger number shows.

I also try and get to the even hours in advance so I can work horses in the arena or do timed onlies at different times.

I also will do an exhibition run on colts where they offer exhibition runs as the atmosphere is different.

(In my area timed onlies are done before, exhibitions are done immediately after)

In my area timed onlies & exhibitions are the same thing & done before the actual open race, in our local barrel races.
So I too would like to know what the differences are in your area
