I am fostering a 3yr old German Short Hair, a good dog but VERY hyper. Would like some advice on how to get him to clam down, trying to get him trained on the basics so I can get him adopted out. I have him sitting, laying, staying and working on whoa, release, leave it and heal. He does walk decent on a leash and we have 10 acres fenced that he runs around on during the day and walk him 2.5 miles almost every night.... problem is when he first gets inside he's SUPER hyper runs all over, jumps on counter (getting better) then he will calm down and lay by my feet. Crates very well all night long. I just need to get him behaving a little better. I am experienced with dogs but not a professional so would like some additional advice if anyone can help so I can save this boy.

We have a cattle dog that would start barking when she saw my husband come through our front gate and wouldn't stop until he walked in the door. I had tried everything and nothing worked. I was watching an episode of Cesar 911 and he uses this soush sound and raises his hand and I tried it and I still can't believe it works but it does. Try to catch one of his shows as he uses it all the time for many different things.

AH! GSP's are my favorite! Send him to me!  haha.

They are definitely a VERY hyper breed, and will continue to be until the are around 6-7. Then they calm down a bit. They are bird dogs and like to hunt. I would try to keep him busy. LOTS of exercise! Keep him worn out.

As for when he comes inside, I would lead him in calmly on the leash so he realizes the house is not a big play room. At least so he can break the habit a bit. Being excited in the house is okay to an extent. They are velcro dogs, so he may also be very excited to just cuddle up.

I would say try to wear him out like tossing a tennis ball or taking him on a jog
Or if you have a dog park take him down there and if he is still very hyper try stand in front of him where you have his attention and say calm or lay down I did that and it works quite well

From what I've heard others say, it appears that my dogs train me.  Sorry, no help here.

Aren't they!? we have one and she's my husbands hunting dog but mostly his big baby, she sleeps on our bed every night and is so smart. her favorite game is pointing cats! She's a cuddle bug but very active, she runs about 5 miles a day! They're a lovely dog. this dog and her are the same age but he's had NO training and attention so why he acts the way he does unfortunately... thanks for the advice!

Yea! It's so funny that they are so hyper, yet such cuddle bugs!

Definitely makes it harder when they have no training and already 3 yrs. Lots of patience! Since this is a foster dog with no trainig, maybe safe to assume he's not been inside a house much before? He's probably so excited to be part of a family!

Best advice I can think of is to just keep calm when coming inside, trying not to make anything seem exciting about the house. Eventually it will become normal to him!

Keep him on a leash in the house. At least until the excitement wears off.  My house is NOT a giant jungle gym and all of my does have learned that from puppy hood. (An adult can learn that jsut as easily as a puppy.)

NOTHING make for a well behaved dog more than training and EXERCISE.

i find it easier to train dogs to behave in the house when it is bitter cold or snowing LOL. dogs are only allowed in to sleep on their beds. if they wander they get thrown outside for a while.  the routine is at bedtime to call them in and give them a treat on their bed. they lay down and stay there until morning.

When you bring her in you should be walking her on a leash. If you just let her bolt in, you'll need to control that. Do some on-leash obedience outside, walk in on-leash and do some obedience inside. If she acts excited, repeat your obedience lessons outside then inside until she looks bored (or at least calms some). Un-snapping her leash can be a reward, just like giving a treat. So, remember not to reward unless she's calm, don't reward a hyper mind. Same with petting, or any attention you give. Try to ignore her unless and until she's calm.

If you need to, you can tie her leash to your belt or waist and just let her stay on-leash until she is calm.

Excercise! Not only physical but also work his brain and make him think. I  work with Border Collies and they can run all day and be fine but when they have to think they get tired a lot quicker! Have him on a leash when you take him in the house. Never let him fly inside and start  bouncing off the walls, keep him calm right from the beginning. Try training behaviors in the house. Not any that will get him excited but things like spin, roll over, shake a paw, bow, anything that doesn't require running or jumping. (Some dogs get excited easier than others and even training some of these tricks may be too much for your guy, I don't know him.
I'm not sure if you've done any positive reinforcement training but even if you haven't you can still train these even if you don't clicker train other behaviors.

This one I'm not sure if it will help you beause you may not want him to get excited inside but it teaches them inpulse control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8svV_gF4W1c
