I've recently purchased 2 horses and neither one of them came with signed transfer papers. One of them is a 4 year old and one is a 24 year old, both still in the original breeder/owners name although both have switched hands several times since then. Any way I can still get them transferred to my name? I've never ran into this issue before.

I would never purchase a horse without having a signed transfer in hand (and not hating on OP at all!) but it helps ensure the horses aren't stolen or hopefully been passed around too much and makes your life so much easier! AQHA will make you contact who you bought the horses from and back track from there from every place they were purchased (huge hassel) but If I were you, I would just contact the name on the papers and see if they'll transfer the horses for you! It would be a lot easier and cheaper :)

The person that is on the papers of these horses are the ones you need to get a signed transfer from.

After 24 years there is a strong possibility the breeder is no longer living. If papers are not in order, I move on. You did not mention if you have the horses' papers and just don't have the transfers.

I bought the 2 horses from my best friend so I honestly didn't even think about it until she handed me the records and transfer papers weren't in there. It's really not a big deal about the older horses' papers but my 4 year old I would like to show. I know he's been passed around a good bit (due to no fault of his own) so who knows where the transfers ended up.

Yeah you need to try to contact the names that are on the papers and see if they will help you out. I have been really lucky to have ran into some super nice and helpful people, so I hope you find the same luck! Luckily with social media and the internet, its not as hard to get in touch. You just need them to send a signed transfer to you (doesn't have to be an original copy, can send via fax or email) I also have had a gal at AQHA who has helped me tremendously on a couple occasions and I have sent her flowers in order to show my gratitude, because all of that is a hassle and a half. We personally always be sure to ask if papers and transfer are in hand before we will consider buying, but this kind of stuff happens all the time with horses that we take in on consignment.

Why don't you start with the person you bought the horse's from?

That would be my best friend and She doesn't have them. My 4 year old has been passed around a good bit in the past year and was originally out in Oklahoma on the track. The 24 year old.. well it's been over 20 years since his papers were last transferred so there's no telling where they ended up.

And yes I have the horses papers, just not the signed transfers.

What is the 4 yr olds name? Maybe some of us Okie's can help out.

Like everyone said, you need a signed transfer from the owner listed on the papers. I've had luck tracking someone down and getting a signed transfer sent when the listed owner was halfway across the country. They weren't who I got the horse from, but were more than happy to sign a transfer for me.

I'd contact the listed owner, or maybe try calling the track where he ran last and they can help get you in touch?
