I like this style with the rope end, but like them with the adjustable wrist piece (like leather popper ones have) so you can tighten them down.  Sometimes hard to find.

Love the lower picture style...You can use them as a "finger"quirt also, put the loop around the finger, tighten the little band to hold it and then you have free use of your hands on the reins and all you have to do is close your hand to have the whip in your hand.

I have no advice except that I dawned on me if I ride daily with my over/under rubber banded onto my belt loop just like I would when I run - I become a LOT better at finding it during a run. I'll occasionally just reach for it to find it, or swat him if he needs a goose etc, just to get comfortable with the concept of finding it.

I use mainly over and unders, but I only hit my horse on one hip. If that makes sense?!? I use it like a hand whip; I don't ever use the actual over and under action. If I have one that needs a little more I will carry a sting bat. I just rubberband it to my hand so I can still use my reins. With that being said however, I'm pretty sure my sting bat has been hanging in the same place for like 4 years.

If I were going to be using a bat, I like these better, I dont like the loose/soft ends I like it to stiffer like these.

I rubber banda  dressage type whip to my hand when I run.  I dont feel like it gets in the way near like I would have thought.  I tried thse type of hand quirts and I am not coordinated enough and always end up hitting my hand on teh back of hte cantle with these.

I tried hand quirts for a while but I think my arms are just too short, I always end up smacking the saddle or saddle pad. I prefer my homemade rope over and under, I'm able to keep in my go-forward position and still smack his butt if I need to.

I use the bottom ones. I am horrible with over and unders, I am not coordinated or fast enough to grab them while running. I would always fumble around to find them and then my horse would already be halfway down the arena before I got to whipping.

BUT..

With the quirts I just wrap it around my wrist, its there when I need it. Grab it, pop once or twice, then let go and I can get back to riding without worrying about it. Easy for me :)

Look at FlyBy Whips on facebook.  I like the stick type whips and these are great.  If I don't have these with the elastic for the hand, I use a rubberband on a regular stick-type whip.  The elastic keeps the whip in my hand and I'm never worried about dropping it or fumbling around trying to hold on to it.

27 years old and never even tried an over and under lol. The floppy whips end up not even hitting the horse when I try those, so I use a bat IF I use anything.
A bat is just so much easier to me bc it's in my hand the entire time, I don't have to find it.
