 You get what you give

Location: Texas | My family's property made it through with no issues all the way until last night when the Colorado river flooding exceeded everyone's expectations. We are about 7 miles from the Colorado river and it made it to our house.
Yesterday evening water started creeping up to the runs of the barn. Overnight the water made it almost into the barn and was up to the concrete slab of our house. Our septic tank has flood water in it and power has been on and off all day, but we are blessed that no water got into our house or barn. 2/10 stalls are flooded but the rest OK.
We decided to evacuate the horses from the property due to the uncertainty of the flood waters. One of my horses was severely lame from a hoof abscess and had been laying down for more than I was comfortable with. And I didn't know how much longer until her condition deteriorated further. Not to mention, there's only so long horses can be in 12x14 stalls with no way to walk around- colics waiting to happen.
Rodeomom3 and I hit the road this morning to get the horses out. We didn't know how close we could get to the house but ended up able to park at the end of the intersection our road hits. It was about one mile's wade through the water. At times I was up to my rib cage in water. Nancy, her husband, and my family walked all 6 of the horses out. She has three of them at her house nice and dry, and I took the three special needs horses with me to the clinic I work at. Bunny got her abscess dug out and bandaged.
At this time my little sister, my dog, and all the horses are out. My older sister, mom, dad, and the rest of the dogs and cats are still at home. And we have a neighbor and her husband at the house as well. The water has started to go down and they should be able to get to the grocery store by tomorrow or Saturday. |
