| My Mare only seems to get allergies after the first rain of the season ( Which happened last week for us here in southern CA). She is ALREADY on Curost total support which she loves and does great on. I truly believe the first rains kick up dust and mold spores in the air, ground, left over hay on the ground etc. She otherwise feels great but will get an intermittent cough during these times that I know irritates her airway. Typical absolutely CLEAR water coming from her nostrils etc.. It is allergy symptoms 101! LOL I wet her hay down, if I could find quality cubes I would try that. My biggest question is what can I give before I run her? WInd aid? Air power? I do have some ventipulman but knowing her temperment, last thing she needs is to get worked up! LOL Thanks for any advice. |

OTherwise, slap some vicks in her nose, or Formula 707 ClearEX. |

| I really like Air Power plus it's cheap. I have used Vicks and Afrin nose spray. Also, very economical. |

| Thanks all!!! I wrote them all down. I'm going to try vicks this weekend and see how she does. The idea of Afrin spray also sounds good. My vet even suggested Albuterol inhaler. Thanks! |

| From experience, the inhaler is a pain in the ass plus I never felt confident they were getting the meds. If you want to keep something on hand, I would say Ventipulmin is your best bet. They are both bronchiodilators and are pretty fast acting. I would think she would respond the same to either. |

I could try ventipulman on her. I have some that is used for another horse. It makes him screwey, but thats fine, he is a lazy type so It makes him better. She is already a work aholic and is go go go . lol The thought of her being even more go go is a little un nerving.. lol |

| I use peppermint oil, a dab on my finger then i place it at the bottom of her nostril! my vet suggested it! I love it!
I also give her a shot of equipulmin before as well.
my girl is allergic to anything processed, and some dust, her airway will collapse
I have taken her off all procsessed feeds, and I have her on curost total and immune. and I give her the pepermint and equipilmin before each ride if i can remember! knock on wood I haven't had her collapse on me since ive made those changes.

Location: North Dakota | I know your horse is on the curost, but maybe, when she flairs up she just needs a dexamethasone treatment? I've had really good luck with Uckele Lung keeping my heevy horse cough free (knock on wood) I do double his dose when it gets dry, when it gets really wet or when his hay might be less than ideal and it really has done the trick. I haven't had to treat him with dex or use ventipulmin on him in over a year-which is a huge success! Also, a trick that I used to use was a dose of banamine-it helps smooth muscle inflammation and has worked when I needed it to!
edited to add: the vicks works great just for the horse in the pasture/stall, it helps keep the junk from getting into their nose.

Location: Southern Indiana | I feel like I get just as good results from windaid as I do from ventipulmin. Air power is good, but I really like the windaid. Itβs not expensive at all. It says to give Like 2 oz but I just give 10-15cc. Itβs pretty potent I couldnβt imagine taking 2 oz lol |

LOL Thanks for any advice. Β First I'd treat with a course of steroids like dex to get rid of the inflammation then I would get nebules of either albuterol or ipratropium bromide for pre race to put on your nebulizer (if you don't have one you can make one for 100 dollars that is as good as all those other jet nebulizers for the sale!) The nebules are a lot easier then mdi inhalers. I like itrapropium better because it lasts 4 to 6 hours where albuterol only lasts 30 minutes to an hour. The only way you are going to stop or control the cough is the get rid of the airway inflammation and control the environmental factors (source of the allergen) the best you can. Which I know can be hard if the source isn't just hay but it is the most important thing to do. The inflammation from the allergic reaction is not only causing the cough but also can be damaging to the lungs if left to go long term. The only supplement I'd suggest daily is high omega 3 from fish oil. There is a study done on pubmed by a vet from purdue University. 1.5 to 3 grams of dha in fish oil improvemed coughing up to 60% and respiratory effort decreased almost 50%. It also greatly improved neutrophils in a BAL. I have also seen some good results on a friend's horse from air power pre race. Have you gotten a BAL done when your horse is having symptoms? It'd probably be best just to see what cells are present. It'll give you a better idea of how to treat it and maintain in the future.
