Since I'm sick and laying in bed... bored to tears... I've been going over my bit inventory and what my horse is doing. I'm wanting something that'll help me "lift" his shoulders and help with some collection as well. I've been using a chain bit with a little gag to it.. he doesn't "lean" on me but we always have trouble with him dropping his shoulder around turns. He's soft in his mouth as well, so I'd like to keep him that way. Wanting to try out a new bit for him but I got a little overwhelmed when I got to looking.

Lifter bit always works for me. You can look on L&W website. I personally like the medium shank and with twisted mouth piece you can even get one with a chain mouth piece.......

I love my pozzi lifter bits. I also really like a goostree simplicity for slow work.

I prefer a twisted wire mouthpiece for both (no dogbone).

Try a Jim Edwards, full ring, gag "Leon" bit. It's my most favorite bit in my arsenal because you can ride a horse up into it. Super great feel and it's worth every single penny! Search under non palate pressure bits--rope gag

My personal opinion...a bit doesn’t fix dropping. A bit change might make it better for a run or a half dozen, but chances are the issue will come back and you’ll go to a different bit and wash/rinse/repeat. And that’s from someone who rides a cowbred who given the opportunity will crawl around the barrel on his belly.

I work a TON on driving him into the barrel, driving his hind end up under him, breaking him off the barrel so he doesn’t try and cheat it etc. we also made a saddle change because even though my old one wasn’t making him sore, it was restricting his shoulder some and also pushing me forward, which made him more inclined to drop.

We like a 'ported chain' bit to help a horse that wants to drop his shoulder. We have a couple of different versions of them. We use them on the barrel horse that has a little drop to him and also on the team roping horse that wants to have some drop. I think that both of our ported chain bits are Dutton bits.

Good points. If I really stay on him thru the turns he's great, but I mean I REALLY have to stay on him and lift him around... to the right he's great, the left he really likes to drop and kinda bulldoze, he was a full time head horse before I started barrels on him. I have yet to make a real run on him, we've just been doing loads of slow work and just basic circles trying to get it perfect before I go to the barrels. And of course I haven't got to ride in weeks because all the rain. So I haven't gotten to stay very consistent! I've been reading and looking up exercises and drills to try and get him to "wrap" the barrels better. Who knows, may just end up being his style and he will really make me work lol!

What they said.

Tuning one to not drop and riding straight lines two handed in a run is the only way your going to "fix" dropping a shoulder.
