| Had a horse get kicked a little over a month ago, which left a small inch length spot on the inside of the hind leg. About a week later it swelled up from the hock to the coronet band. Vet(s) say that he developed cellulitis in that leg. Per their recommendations, I've been sweating the leg w/ DMSO/Furacin mix, cold hosing, and hand walking for the past 3 weeks. The swelling will go down, but will come back up when he isn't active. He has also been on NSAID's and antibiotics as well.
Question is- has anyone else had issues with cellulitis in horses? If so, what did you do to help get rid of it? How long did it take? |

Hate to hear that! Mine has been on SMZ's since for almost 2 weeks now, so hopefully we won't have that outcome. |

| If what you are doing is not working and it is cellulitis, then you need to hit it with a stronger antibiotic. I start with Ceftiofur (Naxcel) whenever I've had it. I don't mess around.

Location: Sunny California | My horse ended up getting it in his back from a biopsy site. It was horrible. He was at one vet's for 2 weeks trying to figure out what it was, so I took him to a specialist and by that time it was so bad he had to be on IV antibiotics for 3 weeks. |

Location: Oklahoma | Get to a vet asap, you need stronger antibiotics and have you checked your horses's temp? Probably needs to be on some bute for pain, fever, and inflammation.
My good mare had this a few years ago, it took months to heal. I did the first treatment with bute and a low grade antibiotic (trimethoprim/sulfadiazine), unfortunately it came back 5x as bad in a week. Then she ended up at the vet for a week on an IV drip. She was sent home with Doxy and more bute. After that was cleared and she seemed fine, I kicked her out to pasture for 6-7 months. The constant movement helped and I havent had an issue since.
I am so sorry you are dealing with this, its awful and very painful for the horse :( |

| He had an elevated temp and heart rate the first day or so. He's been on bute and antibiotics ever since. I will call my vet tomorrow and ask about the Noxcel. |

| I would pressure wrap it and also wrap the off leg since they put more weight on the off leg to give it more support. Also agree with stronger antibiotic |

| I have been pressure wrapping it but it seems to hurt more when I do. He gets 10x more lame when I do. Is that normal?
I will be in touch with the vet tomorrow.
On the plus side, I went out this morning and his leg was 10x smaller than it had been and he was running and playing in his paddock. Not 100% but so much better. I will continue to keep wrapping, hosing, and giving meds until he is back to normal. Thanks everyone for the tips! |

Location: Lost in a sea of horses | This happend to my 2 year old about 2 months ago. Put her on antibiotics the day it happened. It was hind leg with a small cut, and yes swelled all the way down hind leg. Basically just hosed it and kept on antibiotics until swelling went down. Started on shots and switched to the feed thru after about 3 days. I am back riding her and she is doing great. Took about a month before I could get back on her. Hang in there. We did do xrays to make sure there was no bone damage and thank goodness there wasn't. |
