Do you feel a 65 foot building is too narrow to get anything done in? Assuming it was anywhere's from 100 to 150 long?

Yes, if you think that most roundpens are 60'.........you will be doing lots of circles from end to end. However, it would be better than having to give your horses the winter off. It would allow you to keep them legged up and make you become "creative" with exercises.

Exercise? Yes. Barrel pattern? No.

Just looking at options for that day when I win the lottery, LOL! It seems like their is such a huge price increase when you go from 65 feet to wider. It would be nice to do barrels in it but I'm thinking it's too narrow...

I don't know where you are but 65 is fine! Lots of patterns up north here are in that size and they run 12 seconds, it teaches them to get off the first onto the right lead I set barrels up lengthwise too and work on a wider stretch between, it works fine, not perfect but, definatly cheaper

I think it would be too narrow.  There's a 70' x 150' barn I used to ride in and it was way too narrow to put a barrel pattern in.  If you go 65' wide and you set the barrels even only 10' off the wall, you only have 45' in between your 1st and 2nd.
Now I realize that there are a lot of 12 second pens up here but the narrowest arena I've run in is still 80' wide.  I don't mind running in there but I know a lot of people that won't run there because of the size.

When you live in the north, you'd be surprised at what you can accomplish in a 65x150

I agree.. people may run in one but thats not everyday riding etc and it cant be to good on the joints making such tight circles and stuff.. do basic suppling yes.. and basic stuff.. figure 8s , transitions, some ground pole work.. its doable but id go bigger..

My family has a arena that is 70X180 and I find it just wide enough to put up a pattern, but I do find it just a little too small when I am trying to work on my colts lead change between first and second, it just seems like things happen a little too quickly in there for him to do some things properly. We have some people that live west of us and their arena is 80X200 and it seems like it makes a huge difference having the extra 10 feet in the width. I just make do with ours until the 3 feet of snow melts and the ground dries up in our outdoor arena. A higher roof on an arena can make it seem larger as well. Our roof is just high enough so that we aren't knocking out the lights when we are team roping in it.

My riding area is 65x120 and we can do quite a bit in it including lope the barrel pattern. Granted it is an open arena and having the walls may close it in more but it works for us.
