What do you do with a horse that is cutting off the pocket going into your first barrel?   I was thinking counter arcing and starting over?  Suggestions?

Are you constantly holding them going to the first? By saying that I mean are you going through the gate expecting her to cut you off and holding her tipping her nose from the start?

Or once you get there is she just cheating in on you?

Look at third until it's time to turn....I bet $10 your looking right at 1st, therefore your leaning and then she leans....if she knows her job she  will still turn if you focus on looking at 3rd coming in.....

Ditto this.  Coming down the alley look straight at the the 3rd barrel...you have to do this with A LOT of horses.  This is actually how I was taught to run barrels...look at the 3rd barrel on your way in....it works, especially on a horse that has "get in there and turn the first"  on his mind.

She is green, will do it perfect every time during slow work.  Add a little speed and sometimes, not every time she cuts into her pocket going into her barrel, which makes her come out wide on the first.
She is not far enough along to have much speed, so I'm not holding her back and I don't want to change directions on her as we haven't mastered it going to right barrel first yet.

Thanks for any input!

I read somewhere that Fred Hunter recommends to hold your inside leg on them to keep that shoulder picked up. I have to do this w/ mine or he'll do the same thing.

Your pocket could be too big to start with. Your horse knows they want to get to the barrel and make a hard move to get there because they are so far away. Moving farther away from the barrel just makes them want to move towards it harder. Try getting closer. I know it seems a little backwards, but I've had way more luck with this than trying to counter arc and get them to move away from it.

I would make sure her lateral movement skills are better and that her footwork on the turn is "up and around" the turn. Take her back to the gate and put her on her honor to see if she can she walk, trot, canter, and gallop up to the turn without leaking her rib onto your inside leg?  If she tries to push her ribcage into your leg bump her laterally into the opposite direction. Pretty soon she'll figure out to align herself properly and move foward off her butt. Sometimes it also helps to take them by the turn until they free up their feet and mind, then take her back to your "path" around the turn.

Doesn't sound backward to me at all.  Great advice.

Can you post a video, as there can be a few things that can cause a horse to cut off, but it sounds like this horse is diving as you are saying it is not finishing the barrel.

This could be a training issue, horses who are diving can be dumping on the front end to slow down instead of shortening the stride.

This could also be a riding issue, as some said where you are looking, how your body is positioned in the saddle, if you are leaning to the outside, this can cause the horse to dive the opposite way because they are trying to regain their balance.

Another riding issue could be lack of communication with the horse, you may not be giving the horse enough direction when entering the barrel. This may also go back to training.

This horse may also be going into as I call "their teenage years". Where they think they know what to do and are ignoring you. If this is the case then I would reverse arc a 360 as soon as I feel the shoulder drop then carry on and repeat when the shoulder drops again then turn the barrel properly.

My gelding use to do this

So I started running straight up the middle to the third and cutting over to the first at the last minute - eventually he quit doing it and now I can send him and he goes where he is suppose to
