| My mare who had West Nile two years ago was just recently acting as if there was bad neuro problems. We treated her for EPM and she got remarkably better. After I got the all clear to start legging her back up, I let her breeze about 3 weeks into it. When she moved past a lope, she arched her whole body to the left, stuck her face out horizontally to the left, and started to buck/crow hop. I thought maybe she was just excited she got to run, so I tried it two more times, each time with the exact same reaction. I took her to my vet the next day and she seemed very lame on her back left but she should not be as she has not had her legs ran off and has never done anything really too strenuous. She also acted as if there was more neuro problems then before. My vet told me that we could pour a couple more grand into vet bills for her, but he doesn't think she will ever be as competitive as I wanted her to be. (She's 5) So we've decided to throw in the towel, and I will sell her in a few months - as either a broodmare or a horse that a kid or whoever can walk/trot around on. She is race bred - out of Jess Special and a dam who was off the track. How much do yall think I could ask for her and it be a fair and reasonable price? |

| I had a really nice daughter of Okey Dokey Dale that had a neurological issue caused by a heat stroke. We tried several things but could not fix the neuro issue. The vets thought she could carry a foal so we gave her away as a broodmare with full disclosure of her issues. Last I heard about her was that they were unable to get her in foal so got rid of her. She would have been fine as a pasture buddy.
So I guess my opinion is as far as a price you could offer her to a good home as a pasture pet, sell her for killer price, or have her euthanized. Personally I wouldn't sell her to the killer buyer because I don't think it's fair to her to make that trip with her issue. And I would never recommend her as a riding horse, it's just too dangerous to ride a horse with a neurologic issue even if she is only going slow. |

| I wouldn't use her as a brood if she has a neuro condition. Nor would I sell her as a riding horse because that isn't fair for her and isn't safe for her rider. I would recommend giving her away as a pasture pet, selling her to the killers (if you really want money for her, they pay about $1 a pound around here), or just putting her down. |

Where in the heck are you that they are paying $1 a pound for canner horses??? Last year they were closer to .25 CENTS or LESS a pound. |

Yep prices just went up here. Someone I knew just sold a mare that probably weighted 1000-1050 and got nearly $500. No where near a $1 |

| Vet told me that she could be ridden, no where past a trot though. I won't send her off to die anywhere, as she is not THAT bad, just not enough to be a barrel horse. He told me he's okay with her being a broodie or a pasture pet or something for someone to walk around on if that's all they wanted to do. |

Can you trust her to never go past a walk or trot? If not, I would absolutely not sell her as a kids horse. You know how some kids are--they want to go faster and aren't happy just trotting for very long. She could get passed around and some unsuspecting parent will encourage their kid to go faster, and then the kid gets dumped. Not worth the risk to me. |

A horse that is as bad as she sounds, I would never ever put any child are an adult on her with the extra weight on her and she steps wrong, she will go down and hurt someone. To me if a vet says she cant got over a trot, this is bad, but you are saying shes not that bad but cant be a barrel horse? This horse needs to be a pasture pet. Why dont you just keep her and let her live the rest of her life with you since shes not that bad. Edit to say: Sorry for going off but to say she could be a kids horse just rubs me wrong, have you ever known a kid that was killed on a horse that fell down with them, I knew a lady that was killed cause her horse stumble with her and she went head first off and hit her head so hard that she was brain dead.
