This is a very long story I am condensing into a few sentences. Horse hadnt been ridden for a few weeks...looked at him one day (8/14/14) and was 4/5 lame on his **right hind**. No heat/swelling/pulse etc. The vet blocked him sound to the foot...but negative to hoof testers and palpation (didnt feel it was nessecary to xray at the time). 60+ Days later he is slightly weight beraing....at most 2/5 lame depending on the day (better on others). We are getting xrays this coming week...
How long can a hind abscess go on for???? I swear I found the "hot spot" at the bulb of his heel. Can you cortisone it???

I haven't dealt with a ton of abscesses, but the ones I have dealt with never lasted more than a few days. Horse would come up completely lame, I would soak the foot for a few days, abscess would blow out, and then everything was better.
I definitely would not let it go longer than a week without a more thorough exam to make sure the infection isn't spreading and making things worse. In my opinion, 60 days is way too long and I suspect it's something else.

I had one that abscessed on his rear hind right in the toe. He blew out a quarter sized hole in the foot and was off for 4 months while it healed up.

That being said he was fine on Monday, lame on Wednesday and starting draining the abscess by the Friday. 60+ Days with no sign of an abscess draining leads me to believe you may have something else going on in there. The xrays will give you the answer to what's really going on so.

Sending good vibes your way that it's just something minor.

Nitro....correct thats why my vet didnt xray to begin with last month he said it could be a myraid of issues and recommended an MRI since its in the hoof capsule (respected lameness vet/performance shoer)...we are going to xray on 11/3.
I've spent a ton of money on other issues...and just cant justify the $1500 for an MRI when the recommendation is likely going to be the same (6-12 months off).

had a horse I was riding show up dead lame one day, was lame for 5 months. she blew a huge abscess on the coronet band about two inches long. I was riding for a lesson barn at the time so the horse wasn't mine. It was just a sneaky abscess they couldn't find.

I have been going thru a terrible abcess situaiton with my 32 year old gelding.  Initially he was just barely, intermittently off.  Had horseshoer use the testers and got a very minimal reaction in toe of left front.  Over the course of another three weeks he became extremely lame.  Soaked, poulticed, repeated for a couple of weeks.  Finally had vet out and got a tiny bit of pus out of toe.  No improvement.  Became three legged lame and completely non-weight bearing.  Small rupture at coronet band by very little drainage. Small rupture in heal but minimal drainage.  Vet out again two weeks after first visit. Finally decided to go to antibiotics because it was not improving and I was very concerned about foundering in the good foot. Rupture around coronet band expanded to 1/3 of the hoof.  Farrier out again to bevel along the coronet band rupture because hoof was pinching him on every step.   We are now 18 days from the first antibiotics and almost sound.  Basically we are over three months into this deal.  My old guy lost substantial weight over the course and is just now back to a good appetite and starting to gain again.

If you think you found the spot then I would put an ichthammol drawing salve hoof wrap on it. If it is truely the "hot spot" it should draw it within a few days. If you don't get anything from it then I would definitly have it xrayed. What originally was diagnosed as an abcess turned out to be white line disease on my horse.

Its not really "hot" just the most sensitive part to palpation. I am getting him xrayed on 11/3.

Fingers crossed for you that it's something minor and detectable on an xray. While your waiting it wouldn't hurt to put a drawing salve, poultice, or soak in Epsom salts in the mean time to possibly draw anything that may be festering in there out. All of those are relatively inexpensive treatments. Hopefully if it's an abscess it starts to heal before your xrays and at least saves you those costs.

Fingers crossed for you!
