Location: Mississippi | i am a very quiet rider - I ride low handed and keep pretty still. My horse is push style and we've been doing pretty well with the exception of knocking barrels pretty often due to me not pushing him. I had a trainer ride him over he weekend and wow, my boy can fly! He doesn't look anything like that with me on him!!! Any tips on training myself to sit up and really ride? |

| I had the same problem for a long time as my other horse had been a free runner. I think it is a mindset at first. If you think you aren't aggressive then you're not so you have to start thinking positive thoughts. I got so tired of hitting barrels and it was my fault. I just had to start thinking kick kick kick. I still hold the saddle horn LOL but I'm kicking!! You can do it!! |

| I ride a push style that I have to rate (If you don't push all the way in, she cheats and will knock it over, but if you don't whoa her hard she blows past it)....lol Talk about an interesting riding style. I just have to think push push push push and then a hard whoa. It's still a major work in progress. |

This! I do better if I have people yelling at me to "LOOK" or "KICK." Most of the time I'm on my own, but I'm getting there. When I got my mare back from the trainer, she said to make sure my mare's shoulder was past the barrel before I cue her to turn...that has helped A LOT! I also look to the fence instead of at the barrel...somehow in your mind it keeps you going forward longer, at least for me it does. :) |

Yelling is the best thing to help.. What sucks is that there isn't always someone to yell at you... I use to think my trainer was crazy for talking to her self in her runs, but if you get yourself really pumped for your run, and then say kick kick kick going to the barrel, woah, look up, go, and just say it during practice, even slow work, I swear it helps. Or I know a lot of top riders growl going into the turns to be more aggresive. I can remember hearing Jackie Ganter talk about this and I think she Jordon Briggs taught her that, so I mean its a winning technique.
Could you take lessons from the person you had run your horse? If they can ride your horse how you want to ride it I would think they could help you. |

Location: Oklahoma | I have to agree with ORD. I'm not very aggressive because I haven't been back running the pattern for very long. I started growling/talking to my horse on our last few runs last year and it helped us get past them to turn and keep them up. I had much, much, much rather have a free runner! |

Location: Jersey Girl | I am in the same boat as you. Have my first push style. Been knocking pretty much every run this year......I was told to hustle him with my body (how to do that I have not a clue!) We are def a work in progress but this horse is too nice to throw in the towel so I am puttin' on my big girl panties and learn how to ride him (even if it kills me lOL)!! |

Location: Lost in the swamps | Trainer always told me around the barrel look at the outside ear, never at the barrel or the ground, open your hips and get your heels In them and kiss. I've seen this work with a few horses and utilizing this with my horse who is ratey. And open them up a little on a streight away . Helps in between

Location: SE KS | I too have a push style horse after having a free runner!!! Plus no one to yell at me!!! My horse works really well, however since I don't push him all the way past the barrel we usually end up walking around it!!! When I sit he turns, so I have made the issue worse, so I started carrying a bat & swat him when he starts to "set up" on me! (sometimes I think I should get swatted, so I know to "sit up" till we get past the barrel!!!)lol |
