Location: The stix of Utah | What are some games or fun activities you have done with kids and their horses? Tomorrow is our year end practice for our 4H club and we wanted to just have a fun night at the arena. Keep in mind the kids range in age from 5 to 8. Any ideas would be amazing! Thanks |

egg and spoon race, boot scramble,
I'm familiar with the egg and spoon race, but I've not heard of the boot scramble. What do you do with that? |

all the kids, or a group, take their boots off at one end of the arena and pile them up. They start at the opposite end of the arena, ride down, helper holds their horse, they find their boots and put them on, remount and race back to the other end. |

Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | You use crate paper or ribbons that are about 5 feet long and two riders and their horses have to do the barrel pattern or just go a round a stake at the end of the arena. Its a timed event and they can't let go or break the ribbon. It is tougher than you think to do this fast. They are kinda like a team of horses doing the pattern. |

This sounds like fun! Thank you for the suggestions - and explaining them to me! |

| One other and I can't think of the name.
Have water balloon or egg at the opposite end of the arena. Line the kids up at the other blow a whistle have them run down and break the egg or pop the water balloon by stepping on it then racing back to the other end. |

Location: Mi | We've also done the ribbon race where you have the crepe paper you and your partner have it, everyone doing it is together in the arena. The annoncer says walk trot lope backup put the ribbon in your mouth turn a full circle around eachtoher etc etc and the last team with the ribbon not broke between them wins. Its not timed, its just whoever can do whatever the announcer says and not break the ribbon between them wins in the end. Also the wheelbarrow race. Ride horses down get in wheelbarrow and someone pushes you back across in it leading your horse, first one back across the line wins. Or the catalog race. Draw a number out of the hat, ride your horse down to the barrel go through the catalog until find the number rip page out and ride horse back fastest one wins. |

Location: Missouri | Catalog race is a huge favorite here. Also "through the barrel". Have a barrel with both ends open lying down at the other end of the arena. Kids ride down, dismount (need someone there to hold horse), crawls through barrel, gets back on, races back - fastest time wins. We do a ribbon race kind of - but it's a fan belt race. Done in a "down and back" format - two riders holding onto fan belt - fastest ones down and around the barrel and back wins. If it's hot - a fun twist to water balloon - done like a walk/trot or walk/trot/lope class - riders hold water balloon in their mouth. Last one whose water balloon doesn't break is winner. |
