I have a nearly new foam back pad by classic equine. I haven't used it in a while because I read all the stuff about them retaining heat etc. does anyone use them? I hate to just throw it away and I have no idea who i would give it to. Are they as bad as they really say they are?? I don't need to make my horses sore.

I know here with our heat during the summer {could get anywhere from a 100 to a 103 even higher} months would be really bad to use this type of pad, to me they do retain the heat and would scald a horse back. I would not use them. In a cooler climate maybe but in this Texas heat no way.

I highly doubt anyone would want to wear foam socks in the summer, or any other time. Your horse would most likely feel the same regarding foam pads. If you REALLY want to use it maybe with a cotton liner underneath would be ok. Maybe.

Maybe a BB would want it that lives in a cooler climate then we do, and get them to pay shipping on it. If its in new shape it would be really hard to chunk it out if it were me, lol..

Put a single navajo blanket or a thin wool pad under it.

Very true. If I decide to use it might try that. The wool against the back will pull heat and moisture BUT it will still get trapped when it hits the foam I would think. Lol it can stay out in the tack room I guess.

So I got one. Unfortunately my horse got sick and I personally haven't got to even use it yet. what one do you have?

I have the classic equine wool top/Closed cell foam bottom 1" pad. Its contoured, has vent holes etc. Northern CA is much cooler than southern. lol But I should say " HAD" cause it went out with the trash this morning. I needed it gone and all of my barrel buddies here didn't even want it for free. LOL

Its more than I can explain here, but I am at a time in my life right now that I am making decisions and dead weight is dead weight. I am NOT usually a wasteful person. Like I said... just taking care of business in my life. I even called my vet who does a Vets without borders type of deal and he used to take donated saddle pads to the Carribbean islands where donkeys are often ridden in saddles with no pads with devistating results. ANd he is no longer able to import them for whatever reason... I'll just blame that on Obama.
