I am still barrel racing but spreading my wings a bit. I bought a cutting horse and was going to buy a used cutting saddle but am feeling a disconnect with the flatter, slick seats. I just spoke with cowboy collections and they said a lot of woman will cut in a bigger size barrel saddle, and its lighter since it doesn't have the double skirting. For those of you that show cutters too, what are your thoughts on this? I am looking feverishly for a cutting saddle that has deeper pockets and a high rise. I'm leaving my 14' caldwell with a high rise and being 120 lbs 5ft 2" and thinking 15.5" seat? Thank you in advance for your help!

If you keep your feet forward you shouldn't have a problem. You have to adjust your riding habits and carriage of yourself as a rider for a cutting horse while in the show pen. I would look for an all roughout cutter and go with that. a ranch cutter will sometimes have a higher swell than a strictly cutting saddle. I would also look into getting a bigger size seat than you ride in a barrel. (15.5" Sounds about right for your height and weight for a cutter.)  You'll want more room n the cutting saddle to get cushion for mistakes.
Trust me, you won't want that hump in your barrel saddle after your first cutting show. You'll want the flat seat.

I used my older Carl Ammerman that has a flatter style seat to it to cut in when I was doing Reined Cow horse events. And yes, putting a cutters slump in my back after years of gymnastics and dance training was the hardest thing I've ever done,LOL!!!

I am the opposite. I sure miss my flyweight Billy Cook Cutting saddles to run barrels in. I loved them, especially riding colts in them as I could put my feet wherever I wanted to....a very free swinging fender.

Same. I much prefer a cutting saddle to a barrel saddle.

It's not impossible but I always feel like I get thrown for a lot easier cutting in a barrel saddle than if I was in a cutting saddle!

You may also check out the hybrid ranch cutters/ ranch horse saddles .... like others have said - look for a bit bigger seat, you'll want it.

I have a 16" Jeff Smith barrel saddle, but made on his cutting tree that is in immaculate condition somebody could own.  Best of both worlds!  Barrel saddle on cutting tree.

I can't imagine riding in a barrel saddle after riding in a cutter.
I can't stand being wedged in those barrel saddles the way I used to.
I hate those high candles too and I love how much easier it is to shift my weight in a smoother saddle.

Been there, tried it and you will ride SO much better on a cutter IN a cutter. You are suppose to move in the saddle otherwise you will get thrown around and not ride to your best ability.

I practice roping in my barrel saddle all the time, I guess you gotta do what works best for you until you figure out if you're going to get serious about it, then invest in a cutting saddle
