Location: MN | I have a horse that makes a popping noise and I'm 98% sure it is coming from his ankles. Sounds just like a human popping their knuckles. Is this normal for some horses? Ive never had him xrayed because he's never given me a reason to and my vet doesnt seemed too concerned about it. He usually warms up out of it and they dont pop anymore.

| Generally the popping noise is from sticky stifles. |

Location: Oklahoma | I have one that every so often his ankles (hind) will pop the entire ride. It isn't all the time, but his have done it since he was a baby. It really worried me when I heard it the first time, but now it doesn't bother me. I do keep his workouts light on the days they are popping really loud. |

So should I have him vetted? What do they do for sticky stifles? Do sticky stifles cause any pain? |

Location: Upstate New York | The horse I am currently running does this in his fetlock area. I put him on a good joint supplement and he no longer snaps or pops. Never phased him in his running. Think it bothered me more than it did him. But he is quiet now. |

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | I have a 9 yr old OTTQH that pops terribly. Had her vetted this spring expecting to have her come back needing something injected, and she checked out 100% and didn't need a thing. My vet said that some horses are just noisy like that. |

Location: Texas | It's not really any different than our joints popping when walking, standing up, etc. If you're concerned, get your horse checked by a lameness vet. |

Location: MN | Thanks y'all! Well my main concern was, "Hmm, if it pops, does that means he needs injections?" He is 10 this year and has only taken one lame step in his entire life, that was when he had stepped on a nail. Heck, the horse shows no signs of lameness with abcesses even. Knock on wood, he is just plain TOUGH. Until he gives me a definite sign that he needs injections, I'll stick to my good joint supps |
