I'm looking for a nice quality surcingle that WILL NOT PINCH. Does such a thing exist? I like putting a surcingle on the yearlings this time of year and every single one we've had catches them and pinches when your putting it on and I don't like it. We haven't tried a fleece one yet....maybe that would help? I want a nice quality surcingle. Please give me some options.

I was told that any of them that have the suffed panels with a gullet in the middle will pinch, and that flat surcingles are best. I got this one from Dover and it's worked great.  https://www.doversaddlery.com/fleece-lined-surcingle/p/X1-30139/

This is the one I got to, and so far I have not had any problems with it.

I was leaning towards one of the higher priced leather ones. The leather ones don't have a tightening buckle on the offside. It seems that the offside buckle is what pinches?

I usually just take 2 shorter fleece lined cinches and use an off billet to attach them on each side.

I’ve also got a bare back pad with a fleece lined adjustable cinch that I use.

I stumbled across one that Bob Marshall made. It has the pommel like his saddles and tightens up just like a regular saddle. I ride with it all the time and there is NO slip to it at all. There are lots of rings on it too for driving or bitting up. I took it back to the headquarters and they took measurements and pictures. I am having another one made for a friend that has a special needs riding program. They said it would run around $200.

I feel like both of these suggestions are much better than buying a leather one. Thanks Miss Liana!

Most of the yearlings I work are racetrack yearlings that will be started in the fall. They need to learn to wear the surcingle comfortably. I let them wear it while I’m doing ground work.
If it’s one of my own I’m not worried about it, I’ll just saddle him when he’s ready .

Same as Miss Liana ours are race yearlings. We start them in an old exercise saddle with no stirrups first few times then do some ground driving with a surcingle once they are used to the old saddle.
