Location: TN | Can someone please explain the differences between the futurity, slot race, juvenile, derby, etc.? Also, what's the rules on competing? I know a little about the ages they compete in those events, but I'm curious about how does it work if you choose to run your horse as a 5 year old futurity horse instead of a 4 year old. I really don't know much about futurities. Someone please enlighten me. :) |

| The Juvenille is for 3 year olds only... so that would be 2016 babies this year. They cannot compete before Nov 15th of their JUV year. The SuperStakes Slotrace is the 3 year olds... so 2016 this year... but that has be to their first competiton ever. And then they turn around and run again in the qualifying rounds of the JUV. The Futurity is for 2015 or after foals that have not competed prior to Dec 1, 2018 (next year that will change to Nov 15). So horses can be either finishing up their year at the BFA futurity or just getting started on their 5 year old year. They cannot run twice at the Futurity. :) Then the Derby is for horses that have competed in the Futurities the previous year(s). Clear as mud?? haha |

Yes there is a 2D, which is a full second off the winner. |

I’m so glad this was posted bc I am having such a hard time wrapping my mind around this! So, some of these futurity horses have been running all year because they can start to be entered Dec 1 of their 3 year old year?? I was always under the impression that they couldn’t have been entered until Dec 1 (now Nov 15) of their 4 year old year and thus the BFA was one of the first races for them. Is this only for the juvi/supersteaks horses? I’m so confused ?????? I’m really trying to figure out the timeline of when a 2017 colt can first be entered and still be eligible for the 4 year old futurity. |

So a 2017 foal for example: If you are wanting to run them as a 4yo futurity horse (2021 season), they cannot be entered until Nov 15 of 2020. Their first runs would normally be in the 2020 juvenille race... however you have a few days to enter barrel races before then to prepare. If you buy a slot to the SUPERSTAKES your FIRST RUN EVER has to be at the 2020 BFA SLOT RACE. Then you would compete ALL 2021 season on your 4yo horse and your last run would be at the 2021 BFA FUTURITY (sidenote on this is that there is 1 futurity left this year for 2015 foals, the OKC Futurity... i dont know how that will look in the future..) If you hold your 2017 foal to be futurity eligible as a 5yo (2022 season) then your first run will be at the 2021 BFA futurity, competeing against 4 year old horses who have run all year. This was our first year doing this and it was a HUGE learning curve... another thing to note is that you are entering most of the big futurities up to 6 months in advance... thats why you see so many turnouts during the BFA Futurity.. those entries were due in June :) |

| What about the derby? Do they have to run in their futurity year as a 5 year old in order to run in the derby? The reason I ask is I have a 5 year old who was put on the back burner that I would be interested in running for the first time next year as a 6 year old. Is that even a thing or did I make that up?? |

Yes they have to run as 4 or 5... futurities are only for 4 and 5 year olds and in most derby's you must run in the futurity to be eligible for the derby. |
