I have a quirky little horse that's been through a few owners and he rides really well off your body movement but if you touch his face no matter how soft he seems angry he's pinning his ears and chomping on the bit sometimes also tossing his head. I have him in a three peice with copper roller but have also tried just a smooth snaffle and one of the Sherri cervi bits and he's the same in all. I have not had his teeth done because I was told they didn't need done when looked at. He is kind of a nervous horse anyway. Any advice? He's fine if you never touch his face but I realize that's pretty ridiculous.

I have found my horse has a low palete and cant tolerate most bits, so I ride him in a hackamore.  Plus he has TMJ problems which contributes to a lot of other problems. He will let me touch his face but not for very long

I was going to say exactly what 3rdtimesacharm said had a mare who refussed bit. Didnt realize it til i looked in her mouth she had a shallow pallete. She plain and simple just didnt have the room for a bit, so i did a hackamore and she was wonderful!! So try it in an arena first just to be safe.

I also owned a mare with a low pallet and a fat tongue and a chain mouth snaffle worked best for her. She did ok in a hack but would get really stiff when running barrels or penning, would even brace against it at times.

Edited to added she was also a very nervous horse and loved sweet iron/ copper mouthpieces. I found a sweet iron chain o ring and you could hear her sucking and playing with it all the time.

I have a mare that is the same way but will get her tongue over the bit to boot. I have ridden her in a hack and she hated it, but found for every day riding she does well in a CJ ported spoon with a copper roller. She rolls that thing a mile a minute but she rarely puts her tongue over. She's a very sensitive and nervous horse...I'm sure being her 7th owner doesn't help matters much, but she is here to stay. If she always has a few issues...that's fine, but she's much better than when I got her. We run in a CJ medium ported pretzel...I have a light hand and she turns well off my legs.

I had a gelding that had blind wolf teeth. Any contact with the bit would make him bolt forward.

I cant run mine in anything with shank - he will lose his mind - when the curb pressure squeezes he loses it

I either run in in a sweet six with lose curb or jim warner hack

I have one like that too... he has a high pallet though and smaller mouth. A 3 piece with dr. bristol works best on him it seems. I ride him in a Dave Elliot spur up 01 or 02 and so far so good. The chin strap is a nylon soft rope. I also use a leather bonnet on him. But he is very sensative, don't hardly touch him, maybe to lift a shoulder, do NOT touch him to stop, just sit and say whoa. If you touch him he will nose dive into the ground. He has to be one if not the hardest horse I've ever ridden. I've had him since he was 2 months old, made the mistake of sending him to a bad colt starter and so now it is all about fixing him. He has come a long way, so if this is the worst then oh well.

My gelding has a low palate and fat tongue. A chain works nice, but he still chomps, puts his tongue over and fights it. I am trying a neil Merrill myler with tongue relief right now... so far no chomping, no head tossing, and no tongue over the bit.. Have not ran in it yet, but I sure like it so far.

Yep...
I pulled my gelding essentially out of a cow pasture when he was 13. He was broke to ride but not much finesse training and I'm not sure how much of it was in a bit, they typically rode him in a hack I was told.

We've been through a lot of bits and we've come back to a pozzi hack with a tie down. He gets offended if I touch his face with a bit during a run and his brain can shut down. He rides normally in a myler snaffle.

The gelding I am working with right now absolutely hates bit contact. He throws and shakes his head if his bit guards are not on. Try getting thick soft bit guards and then putting thin rubber ones on the outside, it keeps his him from thrashing his head around. I don't even have to have any pressure on the bit what so ever for him to thrash his head if the bit guards are not on. This is with every kind of bit we have tried on him.

I would check teeth first and foremost.  But maybe try something with a port?  My horse hates snaffles and chain buts but loooooves something with a port.  Or a hacks more,  mine loves the hackamore even more,
