Thought it would be fun to post pics of our old horses (20+) and then post their feeding regime and what you think makes the biggest difference in their condition.

This is Bluff -- he's 24 appendix horse that I've had since he was 3. At one point he had colon ulcers & he's always been slow on feed and will only eat so much hay. I've had to do some crazy things with his feed. Some things he doesn't want mixed, some things he does. He's been a pasture ornament the last few years.

I just started adding Chaffehaye to what he was already getting about a month ago because he'd dropped off on his weight over the winter a LOT --I could see rib-- and his appetite had gotten worse too. Tried probiotics and didn't help. We're 3 bags in and I've seen a huge improvement - more than I'd counted on!

Strategy (Original) 2 scoops per day (3qt scoop)
1 cup rice bran, 1 cup flax seed
1/2 scoop each of alf cubes & beet pulp (soaked)
1 gallon of chaffehaye
10 pounds of fescue/orchard/dallas grass hay

This is Jetta. She is 23 years old. I got her from BB BLM as a pasture buddy for my gelding Vinny, this was before I got a third horse. Jetta is not sound enough for riding as she was diagnosed with pretty severe navicular. With the help of my amazing vet and farrier I have gotten her as comfortable as I can. She'll trot around and run once in awhile but basically she takes it easy. Very recently I have started noticing some stiffness in her backend too and my vet is coming back out to see what we can do. I'm very happy to have Jetta with me for as long as I can.

She gets:
ADM Senior Glo
Aloe Vera Juice
MSM
Good quality hay

I wish I could post pictures from my phone as computer went kaput. My Buzzy is 30 this year and I have had him since he was 9. He has survived colic surgery at 10 and a spiral fracture of his leg at 22. All he eats is Safechoice senior. He get 2 scoops morning and night and grazes 24/7. I quit giving him hay about a year to 18 months ago because he could not grind it up well enough to swallow it. He looks wonderful. And I actually saddled him up and rode him 2 weeks ago and he was spunky as ever. I had the vet/chiro out last week and he could not believe how good he looked. He was one of the ones who helped him with the spiral fracture. He even asked me to get him out so he could look him over to see if he was sore anywhere and he was not. They don't make them like him anymore, he is a tough horse for sure.

Lucy is 32ish this year (she's grade and can't be aged anymore b/c of tooth wear. But, I got her when I was 13 and she was 10. That was...umm... a long time ago! lol!)
She's not completely shed out in these pictures and looks better now.
She eats 15-20lbs of a local senior feed (Golden Years from MFA).
I've tried lots of other more expensive feeds and have added beet pulp, alfalfa, oils, etc. This feed keeps her looking good without the fuss.
She's also turned out, although she quids terribly.

This is Ted (dudes a pitch) bought a few years ago underweight with ribs showing with a winter coat on and a very short tail.Just bought him on a gut feeling and from the heart. He is 22 years young and probably looks the best he every has. He has earned a special place at our farm and will be buried there. With abuse in his past he just needed some patients and love. Man is he fun to run and wish I had him with he was younger. No one cant believe his age. Just gets the same feed as our other horses that our local feed mill make custom and plenty of hay and pasture

This is my old man Banjo 30 this year! solid as a tank! Grade horse, found out through DNA hes South American Mustang Tennessee walker and Rocky Mountain.

we've cut back on his feed to 1/4 scoop because he gets fat on air. Feeding right now a mix of Southern states pellet and Legends Performance feed.

Here is a pic of I took of my old guy in his winter clothes. He is 25, probably the best horse I've ever ridden.  He still likes to be ridden and he takes good care of the greenies.

He eats a 12% protein, 8% fat pellet, alfalfa hay and soaked beet pulp.

Not a great pic but this is my 26 year old, Colonel Cal.  His feed is is simple: 8lbs Nutrena Senior daily, Dynamite Free & Easy for joints, and all the grass hay he can eat plus pasture grass.
