Many of my bhw friends can recall a few conversations and posts concerning my mother in law over the last year.

I won't get into detail again....she did end up moving back to her hometown in July.  She has since sent me a FB friend request twice, called me a dozen times, and has sent twice that many texts.  Oh, and has called hubby and father in law to complain about how I won't call her back......but I have stood my ground and not communicated at all with her.  And both hubby and father in law have been really good about not hashing anything out with her, or complaining about her phone calls to them.

But I just wanted to post a more positive thread this time.

I am learning that I am very grateful for his father.  I never got to know him well and we had our issues.  I don't know why.  Aside from the one time he lied to me, to go along with a story that hubbys sister made up to try to get me to loan her money, which he has since apologized for.

But since mother in law left, my father in law and I have been able to connect on a better level, and I honestly and truly enjoy having a relationship with him.  He's not perfect, nor am I, but it warms my heart to get something good out of this whole experience.

I just wanted to share becuase I went through some tough times in the last year, some of them including the mother in law and how she treated me during my health issues, so I wanted to say thank you to this board for support, and to share a happy side of life with everyone!

It's great how a person can eliminate the "negative" factors in their life and it lets the "positives" shine through.

It's just been a shocker....I find myself WANTING to go hang out with him.....not dreading it like I did when MIL was here.  I didn't imagine I would want to do that.  I like it though.  I just got off the phone with him because he is stressing over housing (hubby's mom convinced him to move out here with her and they would split the rent, then she up and left him agian, for the third time, and he can't afford the rent alone).  I called him this morning just to reassure him that hubby and I are in fact tracking this and we are working on things for him, and that he is NOT alone.  He cried.  He has felt so alone for so long that he's not used to people being nice to him.  He asked us if we could support his (not financially) decision to stay out here with us, and possibly follow us whever we go (as we PCS with the military)

You don't get to choose your family.  Kudos to you for giving your FIL a chance.  That speaks volumes about
the size of your heart.

Have you thought about putting a small mobile on your property where he would have his own space and you would have yours?

Im so glad to hear this. You know I was not comfortable with all my inlaws at first but have really grown much closer to them and love them just as much as my own family now. I hope you can continue to develop a positive relationship with him.

We won't be here too much longer, probably only another two years, and we would have to excavate a place to put one, not to mention buy one, etc etc.  If we were staying here permanently we would absolutely consider something like that!

Β Yep. Welcome to the military. I'm hoping we only have two more moves. One PCS and one after retirement. We asked the rental agency for his house. They are going to call the owners and see if they would reduce the rent for him at all. It's already on the low side so not sure they will but it can't hurt to ask.

Is he handy with tools? Maybe he could work some of the rent off.

Β Unfortunately no. He was a chef and can sew like no other, but is too disabled to do any hard labor.
