Location: Texas | Okay, so I would love to hear everyone's input!! What kind of barrel races do you guys like to go to? 4D or 5D?? Added money?? Prizes?? Pre entry or no??
Say if you had a 5D with buckles to first in each D, and $500 added, would you come?? What is too high of an entry fee for you for that set up??
If anyone has any other input feel free to say so :) Thank you!!! |

| I prefer 4D unless the added money is over $1000 and then I don't mind the 5D. 500 added and less I wouldn't want to pay more than a $45 entry(that includes the facility fee) Pre-entry is always nice. |

Location: Texas | I agree. I feel a 5D splits the money up if you don't have enough added.. But it seems like we always have someone say "Well we would come to your race but you're having a 4D and we prefer 5D.." So I thought that I would ask! |

About a month ago in our area there was a 5D with $1000. added money. It garnered 136 entries.
Buckles to the D winners & paid 7 places. Entry fee was $40(?) With pre entry option.
Next weekend there is a 5D with $2,500 added money. Buckles to division winners!! Preentry option & $52(?) entry fee.
We also have a local BBR wednesday night series starting the First of September. No pre enter & $26(?)
I am going to all: because they are close, inexpensive & the one has extra added money to make it worth the hour n half drive.

Location: on my horse | the more D's the merrier lol, added money is great, also the more the merrier there. If there's enough people attracted and seems like it'll pay well enough I'll go to just about anything. I've paid around 50 dollars to enter each race this summer and it's a little painful but generally still worth it. |

Location: Oklahoma | I like the 4Ds just fine, but it was nice to get a 5D Bonus Race Qualifer when my horse was just loping the pattern! If it's a large race with substantial added money the 5th D might be okay just in case someone shows up out of the oridinary and alters the usual D time sets. I would attend a 5D with buckles and $500 added just so long as it wasn't any further than 1:30 away. If the race was within an hour I would go even if there wasn't the buckles and added money... I just go because I like to and I can. I certainly don't win enough back to try and justify continuing on... I know I'm not going to breakeven or profit at this point so I just go to have a good time and work on getting with my horse. I probably wouldn't pay more than $40-$45 EF (including additional fees) for that type of set up. I'm indifferent on pre-entries for "smaller" type jackpots. I probably won't pre enter if there isn't a late fee just incase I couldn't get my full entry refunded. If I can get my pre-entry refunded then I'll go ahead and pre enter just so I can run earlier. |

| heres my input:
smaller jackpot ($500 added-100-150 runners): 4D no pre entry required $20-$40 entry maybe prizes to a 5D but no money on a jackpot that small.
bigger jackpot ($500+ added- 150+ runners): 5D no pre entry required $40-$60
I would go to a 5D with $500 added and pay a $40 entry fee but in hind sight $500 added to 5Ds isn't a whole lot of money. I would think to justify a 5D race it would have to be a pretty good sized race.

Location: Lala Land | 4D or 5D doesn't really matter to me, added $ is always awesome, prizes are sometimes a good draw for people. My only complaint on jackpots is a $10 or more office charge and paying too many places in each D. The later is a catch 22 because when I snag last hole I'm just happy to win back some of the entry fee, but I don't think it should pay out less than the fee itself. I love to pre-enter, but walk up without a late fee is always great if I can't make it there early.

| I hate being required to pre-enter... it can be an option but I typically dont enter when their are late fees. I'm just not comfortable pre-entering.
I personally for a $500 added 4D race, I wouldnt pay more than $25 per run. I am also in MN and this may vary but we have several races with $300-$500 added and the open is $20. Some have awards, some dont. They also add a $5-$10 office charge.
Now if you increase the money to $1000+ I would add the 5D and could see entries being about $35.
All JMO - I am not into the big races anymore, mainly because im a poor college grad |

Location: Jersey Girl | I don't really care either way if its 4D or 5D. A definite yes on added money. Buckles are nice too, but I would rather there be more added money then prizes.
I am not big on pre-entering for something local and I would really prefer not to pay more then a $40 entry. |

Location: Central Okla. | Having produced a barrel series for several years I can tell you that it doesn't really matter as long as you have the best ground, run a smooth race and don't have anything bigger very close. Our arena is within 45 minutes of 4 other clubs. All running at the same time of year, on Tuesday, Wed, Thurs and Friday. We always get a bigger turnout than any of the others. Last year we didn't run our friday races and one of the other clubs picked up Fridays hoping to get the turnout we did and it never happened for them. People love our ground. We always do a 5D and usually only added money at the first race and finals of the series, if any (and prizes of course). We just have a $25 jackpot. with an average of 130 every week, it always paid 6 holes. I never heard one person complain or say they wished it was 4d cuz they weren't getting a big enough check. The 1-3D's still got alot of money. It was around $200 to win. For a weekly race and $25 entry, that's pretty sweet change.
I have also produced an annual benefit race with $1000 (or more) added. 5D, always getting 200 or more entries.
If I'm going to what I expect to be a BIG race. I want a 5D so that I have better odds of placing somewhere. I like 4D's with all half second splits just fine too, when i have a fast enough horse healthy. LOL. But I do not like and never have liked the 4d with 1/2, 1/2, whole splits.
All that being said, a weekly race has to stay affordable, $25-$30 max. A every once in a while race with lots of added money and/or prizes can be up to $40 max.

Location: Louisiana | I typically don't do a ton of barrel races but there was one close to home a couple weeks ago I couldn't pass up. It was $5,000 added with buckles to each D and 4-D. It was a $40 entry fee with no junk add on fees. She ended up with 304 entries and it paid over $1000 to win the 1-D. You could pre-enter or enter day off with a $10 late fee. $50 was well worth a $5,000 added race to me. Especially 20 minutes from home. |
