Loving my new colt! He is of course in absolute race shape. I would like to fill him out a little. He was on omelene 200 and cooked oats when I got him. I bought a bag of ultium and have started him on that. Like half pound. He looks amazing but I think he might get hot on it. Would triple crown senior be better? Maybe just rice bran? Thanks.

I fed ultium to my OTTQH for several years. Looked great and never got hot from it, but of course all horses are different. I now feed RENEW GOLD to all of my horses of all ages, background etc. Best feed ever in my opinion. They look and feel awesome.

We need pics!!!!  First off, be prepared for your colt to look good, then go downhill and look bad for a little while (depending on what he/she was on while at the track).  I would encourage you to feed FORCO and just stay consistent with your feeding program even if your horse goes through a period where it looks like they aren't doing well.

I typically also put all of my track babies on an ulcer preventative for a while, like Gastroplus.  Good luck with your colt and I look forward to reading and seeing your successes!

I posted pictures last week on an old thread. lol He was on like 6 pounds omelene sweet feed and cooked oats with free choice grass hay. He is still on free choice grass hay and I have him on ultium. He is really calm so I don't think we will have an ulcer issue. I have used FORCO, but prefer smoothrun products that have microencapsulated pro biotics. But I will keep an eye on him thanks!

I feed all our horses Patriot 14-P. its a 14/6 ration like omolene is but its a pelleted feed with different ingredients. A lot of our horses are off the track and they all look great on it. They also get pasture time and grass hay. I would just feed him the adequate amount of feed that he's supposed to get and not worry about him being hot or stupid. To be honest, the horses I have had that were hot or goofy were that way before they were put on the track. Granted, my Stoli mare when she's getting fed up and when she's pregnant and has nothing to do but eat feed and graze all day, can be FUN to lead around when it's chilly or she's been locked up, LOL. But that's just because she's got energy to burn and she's not doing anything but standing and eating.

Since he wasnt racing at the time of your purchase and hasn't in about 7 months, he should not go thru the yucky change most do. But if you notice his coat looking dull, almost sun burnt, and weight change, like someone else said, dont freak out.

I feed my off the track Quarters and 4yr old prospect Safechoice Special Care. Low in Sugar/Starch and does not make them hot.

Any chance they were running him at match races being that he is still really fit after not having an official out in 7 months?  Sounds like a neat horse!  I must have missed the previous post with all the information.  Good luck with him!!!  I love the OTT horses because they've been handled so much....sure makes being around them easy.

I do have a filly I took in on trade in Nov of last year.  She'd had 2 official outs as a 2 YO and then been run at the match races a good bit.  When I got her, she looked decent, but then went downhill pretty quickly.  Was thin, bad haircoat, feet got really shelly, and she was a bit lethargic.  It took about 8 months or so for her to fully come around, but now she looks great, feels great, and is working great.  Just takes time and letting them get healthy again after coming off all the stuff they run them on....especially at the match races.  Anything is legal there.....

When I got mine I gave him all the grass hay he wanted, rice bran, and ulcer stuff.  He fell off a little but not bad. I now have him on rice bran and aflalfa pellets w/ 1/2 scoop of oats and free choice coastal hay & he looks like a halter horse.  He will crawl out of his skin on Omalene 200 (that's what they were feeding him) it took a few weeks to come off that high, and anything else that may have been in his system.

Mine's been off the track for a long time but even when I got her she had a hard time keeping weight on. They had her on Strategy Healthy Edge (idk what she ate on the track) and I switched her to Ultium and while she looked better IF she ate it, she still would go off it periodically. I treated her with UlcerCureOTC and started her on SmartGut Ultra as a daily feed through, and for grain now she just gets soaked beet pulp and alfalfa pellets. She's turned out 24/7 with the option of going in her stall and I give her as much grass hay as she'll eat. She finally looks good IMO, she doesn't have the tight, drawn up look she used to.

That being said, the Ultium didn't make her hot. Mine was just so ulcer prone I thought getting her off "processed" feeds would be better for her.

No match racing done.

If I could go back and do anything different with the horses that I have gotten directly off the track, it would be put them on a good digestive supplement to help prevent/cure any history of ulcers (even if he doesnt appear to have them now, alot develop them at the track), and a hoof supplement. Some of those shoers there can really cause damage over time and being shod at such a young age.

If this is your first off the track quarter I have a feeling you'll be amazed at how sane they really are. Hauling them has always been pretty easy in my experience since they've already been there and seen it at the track, and all that I have had made great trail horses!

I feed my colt ultium, amplify, all tha alfalfa hay he can eat plus he is out in the pasture at night. He has never been hot. He looks great now but he did fall apart for a little while. I purchased mine off the track as a two yr old. He only had 6 outs with 98si. He is now 3 and is really working a nice set of barrels. I would buy another one just like him in a minute.
