On another thread people were recommending I do a PowerPac on my horse. I don't know a darn thing about PowerPac's. I went back and read some previous threads on this but I still have questions. He had a dose of Zimecterin at the beginning of this month. Can/should I still do a PowerPac now? Is it safe? Thanks.

Get the cattle wormer, it's cheaper and you will need a gun to dose with but it's much more cost effective. I can get it for $37 in my neck of the woods.

On day 5 and he already seems less ribby may not be true but to me seems a difference. My barn suggested giving 1800 lbs and then at the end putting the rest of the leftovers in an empty syringe and getting an extra day! Great idea from a great horse woman.

We just bought Panacur and it was WAYYY cheaper than expected, $80 for two horses.

We are guessing our mare weighs 950ish so were giving here 1100 and our gelding is 1100ish so were giving him 1250.

But is it safe for me to give it only a couple weeks after I gave him the other dewormer?

I would THINK so, but hopefully a more qualified person will answer.

Have you had a fecal done? Are you sure you're attacking the right kind of worms?

My colts get a different wormer each week for a month in the fall to ensure they have no worms going into the winter, never had an issue with it.

You will be fine giving another wormer after 3 months

If you are going to the vet anyway I would get a fecal done then decide what to give

We usually powerpac in the spring and then give the zimectrin on the next worming. You can buy the powerpac unit from the store. As for having a fecal . . . well the worms the powerpac is specifically meant to target, encysted small strongyles, don't show up in the fecal. You can follow the directions on the box and everything should work well. Maybe call your vet on worming so close but honestly I don't think there will be a problem. I've given some wormers pretty close together and never had a problem. Do know that after you give the powerpac it takes like up to 18 days before everything takes effect so keep a really close eye on your horse (they may be sore or moody) after a couple weeks. Most don't have issues but if they have a really heavy worm load they may colic. This is very rare except in cases where the horse's health is compromised already but its good to keep an eye on them anyway.

Encysted small strongyles will not show on a fecal.

Yes, it's safe to PowerPac after Ivomec.  That's actually how I do mine.  Ivomec, then a couple of weeks later PowerPac which is a five day treatment, then five days later follow up with Quest Plus.

They all get different parasites and springtime is the best time to get this done.  If you have one that you can't get to gain and you haven't done a PowerPac, this is definitely my first recommendation.

Ok cool cool. My mind is eased. I'll try it. I have one that is just not gaining weight no matter what I do.

Definitely give it a try, but consider your feed as well.  We are finding feeds that are contaminated with many different types of medications that can alter a horses digestive processes and I'm sure that you've read about the ones that are deadly like we all have.  I just posted about "Gas colics" and other things just like this.

I think I'm pretty safe there. Renew Gold, Standlee Alfalfa Pellets, and Standlee Beet pulp.
