Ok BEFORE everyone goes off on me I do NOT like to wean at 3 months but leased a friends mare and SHE is going to wean my foal at 3 months shes in Ok and I am in Mo. She believes it doesnt benefit the foal to keep them on longer, I personally like them to be with the dam til 6 months or just before.
Just want to make sure I do as much as I can for the colt. I have the dam on Forco right now and plan on continuing it with the foal but was just wondering about a good feed for him.
this is the pedigree of my foal

I make sure the foal is eating grain with its mother long before I wean it. I feed the same feed that I feed the mare so that there are no major feed changes when weaning. Feeding hay before weaning is a help too. I feed a 14% pellet.

look up progressive nutrition. They make awesome foal products. I work for an equine hospital and when we have an orphan or a mare not producing enough and the foal needs supplemented we use progressive's stuff. They have several different products.

I personally have used a supplement made by them for physitis in my yearling and saw amazing results. I trust the brand 100%.

I wanted to add my weanlings (5 months and up) eat Blue Bonnet Growth, a lot like the Ultium Growth. BUT with yours being 3 months you might be more interested in a "foal feed" than a "colt feed" if that makes sense lol

IMO

NO ALFALFA!!!!

That is what CAUSED my filly to get physitis. Too much protein caused the growth plates in her fetlocks to become swollen and painful. It takes months of stall rest and a strict diet to fix.

Someone really needs to beat your friend's a$$.... Never mind the food aspect, 3 months is NOT enough time for the mare to teach a foal how to be a horse...

What does you lease say? It's your horses I would have her do as you wish, and at least keep her on for 4 1/2-5 months

Many industries wean at 3 months with no problems and horses develop into large, fully developed inviduals. Just throwing that out there. Its not a horrible thing.

Alfalfa is FINE.  It isn't excess protien that causes physitis, it is a vit/min imbalance.

Renew gold and alfalfa. They need a high fat diet.
