Was the horse low on selenium ? Selenium is toxic and causes symptoms similar to colic.

Suspected low and blood test results are not back yet but my vet went ahead and did it anyway. Said she has never had this reaction after giving this shot.

Your vet is an idiot.

Sorry, but you don't suspect that Selenium is low and give the shot.  Too much can be toxic.  It can cause a colic reaction or a tying up reaction.  There are lots of things that can be wrong that a blood test can find, but don't just go flying off the handle and give a bunch of crap that isn't needed on a hunch.

Sorry this happened to you . selenium is very rarely low and only happens in 1 or 2 areas of the country one being Midwestern WI and I can't remember the other off the top of my head. Selenium and Vit E are must both be in the proper levels for either to work. A horse can have up to 5000 iu s of E a day with no addvers reactions but a horse can not have over 3 mg per day of selenium and there blood levels should be between 0.17 and 0.25 ppm .....

We had one that would tie up.  Gave him Vit E/Selenium once a month and never had any problems, but every horses could respond differently.

Where are you located? North West, Nevada, and around the Great Lakes have some selenium deficient areas. Do you know the size of the dose that your Vet gave your horse? What were the horses symptoms that led your Vet to think about selenium deficiency?

I suspected mild tying up or ulcers.

Agree 110% with nateracer!
I dont think I would allow my horses to be a test dummy for that vet.
After many years in an equine clinic, foals were the only ones I have ever seen given E-SE. Vit E and Selenium.
That should not have happened without evidence that it was needed.

Why did your vet suspect the horse was low on Se?

We have a mare and a gelding that both tie-up so, as instructed by the vet, we give the mare a shot of SeE every 4 to 6 months. The gelding gets a shot on an as-needed basis. If you miss the mare's shot she will tie up almost to the day, 6 months after her last shot. It doesn't matter how good of shape she is in or if she is doing nothing but standing around eating for months. We have never had an issue with our horse exhibiting negative reactions to the shot but our valley is naturally low in Se and I tend to believe this line of horses is genetically predisposed to Se deficiency. My two horses are half siblings and a friend of ours has a mare that is a half sister as well who also ties up occasionally.

We have two full brothers, both prone to tying up.  One is almost always low in selinium when tested and we feed a selenium salt to him and have used the shots.  Other brother has tying up issues but if he even licks the first brother's bucket he will have a colic episode.

We were selenium deficient where I grew up in Illinois. When I bought horses from Texas or Oklahoma I would have to supplement with Vitamin E and Selenium.
