I found a Kentucky Mountain Horse for sale as a trail horse. I need a good solid trail horse which is what he is advertised as, but I don't know anything about this breed. I've always had Aqha or apha! Or grade cowhorses. Can anyone give me any advice, things to look for, or pros and cons.

I don't personally know about them, but about 15 years ago I started researching them because of their reputation for being so smooth and excellent trail horses. And the ones I found were beautiful. I talked to some breeders and they love those horses!! Good luck if you get him.

I have one! Ran barrels on him for years. Wasn't great but did his job. He's retired kids horse now and soo great! He's my Cadillac on the trails. Smooth and steady! It's what they are bred for!

I still ride mine in barrel saddles, what ever is comfy to you and fits him. My boy is built like a quarter horse. He's heavily muscled, more on his front end than his back end.

Β I grew up on Tennessee Walking Horses and still have one that I use for trail riding. Like any other horse, you will have to have a saddle that fits them properly but your saddle may work. Gaited horses have more action in their shoulder and a longer stride so you gave to make sure they have room under the saddle to move and there's no interference. I've never ridden a KMH, but they are always so pretty!

I haven't personally had one but have known people with them and also had a neighbor at one time who raised them and they seemed like good horses! I especially love them when they're chocolate with flaxe mane and tails. I also had a Tennessee Walking Horse that I used for trail riding and she was wonderful, makes trail riding a breeze!

Edited to add, my TWH is the one in my profile picture. Her name was Outlaws Lady Ann and that was a 19 mile trail ride and it was so much fun!

I have pics from the owner but none of my own. I have to go try him out. she works out of town so I can't go try him until next weekend, and if not that weekend then two weeks from then.

He is solid black

I trained Rocky/Kentucky Mountains for years when I was younger. They are super easy to ride, but they can get hot headed if you run them out of their gait. Great trail horses. Always look at their feet. If they are super long, they are not trimmed properly. You want slightly longer toes, but not so long they are on their heels (automatic sign of a backyard gaited owner with a bad farrier). I would rather them trimmed like QH's then trimmed way too long.

Let us know how it goes. The chocolate with flax mane and tail are so gorgeous, but I love love a black horse!
