What is the average cost of having your mare bred here in Canada to a stud from the USA?
Shipping, vet bills, good experiences, bad experiences?
I am still very new to the breeding game and would like some input on your experiences getting your mares bred to an american stud.
Thanks

I have shipped up frozen and cooled.

Frozen was the first and it was just under 600 plus the 300 for the federal vet to rubber stamp the export permit.

Cooled shipping was under 500, and at this time they changed the way the federal vet did things and his cost was 30.00. With cooled someone has to pick it up at the airport, this I didn't know, so I ended up paying the vet to send someone to get it.

All of this was USD

You also need to get your vet to complete an import permit, and this takes approx 30 days to get approved

I know for me I charge $700 per frozen straw to ship into Canada. This covers the federal vet charge, ect... I am in the US, btw and the charge is in US dollars.

I need to clarify, you are saying per frozen straw.

When I got frozen shipped, they sent me 6 frozen straws, so you are saying you would charge me 4200? That is insane

Thanks for the input.

As for veterinary cost, what were you guys averaging?
And what was your conception rates like?
I'm located in Alberta if that makes a difference.

Frozen, I was told the conception rate is lower then with fresh. Around 50% It also depends on the motility of the semen once thawed. Supposedly the standard motility on frozen sits around 30%.
My vet charged more for AI with frozen, then with cooled. My mare didn't catch the with frozen, so I shipped up cooled and she caught first time. Total vet fees around 2500.

I haven't used Kirby Watt, but I have been told this is one of the best repo vets in Alberta

In our part of Ontario (northern) it cost us about 1600 on vet fees and then the stud fee/shipping costs were extra. I have found it cheaper a lot of times to get health papers and head south into the US if your in a location close to the border.

Cooled is alot harder to get up here it has such a time restraint with it....and if they screw with you at all at the border its a waste of money...the first mare i aid was with cooled before the new rules were in place and ups lost it..so got another shipment and that one made it and my mare caught....the frozen i have was.supposed to be used a couple years ago but life got in the way.....and thats whats nice about frozen you can store it....p.s.im in alberta as wellM

We live in BC and are close to Montana border so we got coggins and took our mare to LaSalle clinic in Kalispell. vet bill was $1400 which included all the AI costs and also the board till we ultrasounded at 15 days. The vets there were great. Called me almost daily and let me know what was going on.
