I have a competitive 1D mare who paces HORRIBLY in a stall at barrel runs. It is very hit or miss, one minute she will be completely calm or even be comfortable enough to lay down and then I will come back an hour later and she's in a profuse sweat pacing so rapidly she acts like she's in a trance. It does NOT matter if she has a buddy, she will still do it with her trailer buddy stalled directly next to her, so it is NOT a buddy issue. She is PERFECT at the trailer and still runs great even with the pacing. She is on omeprazole for ulcers and I have been using Calm and Cool paste while she's in the stall, but it is losing its effect. I am looking for something to replace Calm and Cool, something to take the edge off and get her to relax.

Can you give her a "toy" for her to keep her mind off things? Or there are those hanging lick toys, I had a mare that loved hers.

I've had lots of people say their PHT/MagnaCu items have really helped, especially Blankets, Fly Masks, Poll Pacs.  I have a horse in my barn that sounds similiar to yours, just not that extreme. We've had lots of luck with Rite Trac, and most currently Cur-Ost.

Good Luck!

Don't use calm and cool. Use magnesium and B 1 .For some reason when horses come off calm and cool they become a double whammy of nutso.also it doesn't last long enough.

Have you tried tying her with a hay bag?

I've tried tying her with hay, she will pace even on the shortest lead. Distraction toys don't work, it's really an extreme thing. Thank you everyone for your input!

pm me your address and I can send you some samples of THE Calming Cookies (in cute holiday shapes because we all know horses love that!!). They are all natural and will not test at the track or AQHA. I have customers that swear by them.

Raspberry leaf is great to just mellow them out. You can get a big bag that lasts a while for relatively cheap through Animal Element.

Adapt by Nouvelle Research. Good stuff. Also the Stomach is doing amazing things for my nervous colt.

I'm willing to bet good money that this is a digestive/nutritional problem. Take it for what it's worth, but I'd be pulling the processed grain, going with an alfalfa/oat/rice bran combo with free choice grass hay, along with the above supplements. Try it for 30 days and see if it helps.

Sounds like a tummy thing going on, and I agree on the PHT sheet, I bet he would relax with a sheet.
