Location: Northern Ontario | Ok. So my mare currently has a billycook 1524 saddle. it has a 6 3/4 gullet with FQHB. I have included pictures of it with just a regular pad, no pad and with a pad + shims. I am not crazy about shimming and it fits the best with the shims but its a bit tight. The saddle has too much rocker and tips forward and lifts in the back. Also, I think the gullet may be a bit too wide. What do you think? I heard the cactus CJ saddles are a good fit for my type of mare. Also, I had another little issue. The billy cook saddle is built on a CJ tree. Is that the same as the cactus tree? My mare had a really straight back, round back with smallish withers. Also, I don't want to spend like 3K on a saddle that may not fit.

Location: Kansas | For starters, what shims are you using? Because the one in the picture looks thick. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I have a mare built similiar to yours and a CJ by Cactus fit her perfect. I have one for sale too. I think you have too much 'stuff' going on under that saddle in the pics.
(and it's not 3,000) |

Location: Northern Ontario | yes the shims are super think(I bought them online and never used them) but I also have CE shims and it is not thick enought for this saddle. I didnt ride like this. I just tried it on to see what modifications would be needed to make it fit. Do you guys think I should go for a narrower gullet? |

No, I don't think so. It's hard to tell from pictures but if someone recommended a CJ, that is a 7 inch gullet with a more flared bar for horses with bigger shoulders. |

Location: The Great Northwest | To me your horse has a nice back and looks to be "wide", hard to say from a photo, in the shoulders. The saddle being up in the back would indicate that the gullet is too wide. Is this where you placed the saddle or where it settled after walking in a circle both ways? If it is to narrow, the scapulas will push the saddle back, if you are setting the saddle on or over the scapula. The saddle that fits the scapulas will work under it without pinching. There is a lot of things that could be going on that need to be checked. |

Location: Northern Ontario | Yes, she has a wide back. The saddle pinches her shoulders. She also doesnt have very high Withers. The only horses I have seen this billy cook fit like a glove are my BOs 16H foundation bred Qh who is super wide and has nice defined Withers and my sister's 16H+ gelding who is also built like a tank |

| Billy cook cj trees are way different then the cactus or reins man cj tree.
This saddle is too narrow and has too much rock |

It may have too much rock. Set the saddle on bareback and move your horse, then take and push down on the back and see what happens to the front. You can teeter-todder the saddle with too much rock. |

Location: Northern Ontario | Yes, it definitely has too much rock. Now is it too narrow or too wide? |

| I would say the saddle is too narrow.
Too much rock causes it to look like it is too wide in the front as when you tighten it the saddle will always rock forward.
Sadly not many saddles fit flat backed horses.
Ones to try
Tod Sloan with a B3 bar
Cactus Charmaine james
Martin custom ordered with a flat bar, probably a 9 gullet
Or try a circle y Tammy or Jackie treeless wide |
