If you saw my post earlier, here is an update. My gelding is released to be ridden, he has healed beautifully. However, he is now lame on the other foot. So I have been considering selling my 3h trailer to downsize to a cheap little trailer so that I have some cash to restart with. With all the vet work I have done in the last year I just don't have the funds to buy another horse if I keep my trailer. Thoughts on this?

That's what I'd probably do. You can always upgrade once you get more $$ in the future.

Thanks! I just have been getting mixed feed back from people in my life over the issue. The trailer is super nice and I'll miss it but the past year has been rough and I don't get to do anything fun with my horses, just take them to the vet. I'm really tired of it and it is hard to maintain. So I have been considering ripping the bandaid off and restarting.

Trailer is no good without a horse to haul in it! If you're in the situation right now where it's one or the other, then I would definitely rather have a horse and work my way back to a nicer trailer as I'm able to.

Is your trailer paid for?  If so, it doesn't cost you anything to keep - compared to what a second horse will.  They also don't depreciate quite like a horse does - or can.  What if your new horse gets injured, too?  Do you know how much the second horse will cost you per month?  Maybe start socking that away until you have enough to buy one?

I can afford the care, that's not the issue. It will just be a long time before I will put back as much money as my trailer is worth. I can afford the vetting/feed/shoeing etc. My trailer has sat for over a year and a half not getting much use. The way I see it, is that I can have a nice trailer sitting in my driveway that I don't haul or I could go back to a small bumper pull and a horse that I can ride and haul.

Yes trailer is paid for, next trailer will also be paid for. I work only a certain amount of hours per week because I am in college so that is why I am considering this.

I would keep my trailer  and put away small amounts of money to buy the new horse while fixing the old horse. Like someone said, vet bills will just double with two horses but the trailer isn't hurting you if its paid off.

by starting over I mean no longer vetting the horse I have. I have rode him 20x in the last year because of soundness. I am done vetting him. Next horse won't be just ANY horse, will have a thorough vet check. EDITED to add: I haven't even ran this gelding. he had issues one week after I got him.

Wait and see if he improves on the RF lameness. I have a family member who helped rehab his suspensory that loves him and would love to have him. That would probably be his home.
