Location: Wyoming | Has anyone ever heard of a hermaphrodite horse? I have a close friend that told me her filly actually has XY chromosomes. If you have experience or have heard of this please let me know. She is very panicked about this and I couldn't lend a word of advice since it never occurred to me that this could happen. Behavioral issues? Registration issues? |

| This happens with any animal, at least mammals. Not real common but certainly not rare. The horse should have a penis, too. We raised hogs and had about three hermaphrodites. I don't think they can reproduce but I would make sure there are no testicles. I did see a thoroughbred on a racehorse rehome site that was a hermaphrodite. He had been raced. |

Location: Spokompton, Wa | I've seen one many years ago at an auction when I was a kid. I remember looking and saying "it's a gelding" but then it squatted to go pee and had the equipment back there too. |

The one on the thoroughbred site had a penis in the very back. Very deformed. AQHA may not let you register one. I have no idea. |

| They are sterile. Never had a horse that was but we had a calf born that was. Got into a pretty good argument with my mom over the sex of the calf. LOL She said it was a heifer and saw it squat to pee. I said it was a bull calf cause I clearly saw male parts. Ran the calf through the chute and we were both right.
As far as genetics goes they have a 3rd chromosome. All females eggs have an "X" only. Sperm have "X" or " Y" but some by mistake have two. XX or YY or XY. So you can have these combinations
XXY
XXX
XYY
Depending on the combination you will see differences in the animal when it is born.

My friend had one too. She was registered filly, had testosterone in the system, did not have ovaries, but did not have outward boy parts either. She was basically a filly that couldn't have babies although when tested would test as a colt sometimes and a filly other times... My friend had no behavioral issues. She said she acted like a gelding but was a mare. Because she literally had no sex drive from the male side and did not have cycles because hse did not have the "baby making" parts she basically acted like a gelding. Best of both worlds in my opinion. ETA: I have no idea what tests the vet ran and I have no idea the specifics. Just repeating what she told me.

| There was one in our area that ran barrels and other events. When he'd pee it was from both ends. They did get the surgery to fix it but I always thought it was cool lol |

Location: Wyoming | Thanks everyone! From the sounds of it everything looks to be female from outside and only indication of being a male is from AQHA. Vet said will run some tests to make sure everything is in line (so far they are assuming she is sterile and may need testes removed somewhere inside) Not sure what those tests will be. Waiting for next year or so when baby is grown. AQHA did register her as a filly. |

We had one growing up. Same as your friend. Female in all aspects but couldn't have babies. She was one of the quietest horses. Competitive for many years and went on to win with several youth and even used in our handicap riding program. |

| I had one many years back. We actually didn't even know until we tried breeding her and the vet couldn't find her ovaries! |

Yes, I have a friend here in Az that she just had her horse tested as he/she has both parts, she had them run a DNA test and come to find out , she is more mare than gelding. Strangest thing I have ever come a crossed. I am not sure if she has had her registered or not, she appears to be perfectly healthy.
