| Hi All! My great dane turned 8 years old last month. She's an inside dog, up to date on everything, clean bill of health at her annual exam, good weight, havent changed anything, she still romps around like a puppy, all that jazz. Monday I got home from work and her bed by where her booty lays was wet. I thought, huh.. interesting, maybe she was just licking or something. Tuesday I came home again and it was wet again, it was pee. I fed and did chores around the house and she went outside with me and I saw her pee, looked normal and didnt struggle, no discoloration or anything. We went back inside and not 5 minutes later she stood up and her bladder emptied on its own... like ALL of it. I watched her stand and she looked just as surprised as I did when this happened. I let her out, nothing. Had a normal pee before bed. Eating and drinking fine, havent noticed anything other than this one symptom. This morning Wednesday, I dropped her off at the vet and told them what was going on, I'm (im)patiently waiting to hear back, anyone experienced something like this before? Thank y'all! |

| Spoke with the vet. She said blood and urine looked normal no crystals, etc., cant find anything wrong with her. We're going to treat with antibiotics as if it is a UTI and if it continues to happen we will start her on medicine for incontinence. She did note that she's not showing classic signs for either issue but we could always do more testing (of course) if neither of those help. |

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | Older spayed dogs can have this type of incontinence. Sounds like your vet is on top of it and will treat as required. |

Location: Kansas | Glad you are on top of the situation and working with your vet. May I suggest checking with petco and purchasing poochpads. They are waterproof pads and washable (varying sizes). I used them in the past with an older danes and the same issue. Wish our Dane kids lived longer...my last of three is turning 9 this year and showing signs of aging :-(. |

Thank you for this, I'll pick some up. For now I wrapped her bed in a crib liner (lol) and put blankets on top, so I can throw in the wash if she leaks again. Danes are great dogs, never complain much and really are similar to a large house cat. They just want somewhere comfy to lay down. :) Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers. Last night and this morning she's been fine, not the best pill taker though, had to resort to the ole peanut butter trick, hehe. Will update after a few days on antibiotics, hoping its just a UTI and this isnt an ongoing thing but if it is there is a medicine called Proin (spelling?) that we can put her on. Side note I was talking to my grandmother about her, and she said "oh dont worry honey, it happens to all of us when we get older, I've been wearing a 'laughing pad/ sneeze guard' for years." Sorry Grandma if thats TMI LOL

| Sadly, I put my girl to sleep yesterday. She had a bad reaction to the antibiotics which caused neurological type symptoms, she lost the use of her back end and was unable to stand on her own or function normally with no better options for treatment. Hope she found a nice big fluffy cloud to lay on because that was her favorite thing to do. Great Danes are wonderful dogs. I'm now down to one border collie/ lab mix, the house feels very empty with only one dog clicking across the hardwood floor behind me. |
