My husband and I are going to the BBR world finals this year, it will be our first time going.  We are taking just one horse and getting an RV spot so we can stay in our trailer.  Here are my questions.

Is it hard to get an RV spot?  I see that you cannot reserve ahead of time.  We are getting there plenty early so I'm hoping we still can get a spot.

I know the grounds are huge, are we crazy to not have a scooter or golf cart?  We are young, don't mind walking and we have a fold-up wagon to use for hauling back and forth from trailer and stall.  But everyone I talk to says we should get a golf cart.  I'm sure we will get tired of the walk but I just don't see the need of renting a golf cart.  Thoughts?

Thanks for any advice!

I went in 2019 for my first time. We showed up later in the day on Wed I think and were able to get a hookup. There weren't many left.... I didnt have a golf cart or scooter and walked ALOT. The stalls are a pretty good distance from the hookups. We had a wagon that I either pulled over to the stalls OR I hooked it over the ball on the truck and drove to the stalls. I decided I was going to get a tack stall if I ever went back. Everyone was super nice and they are efficient helping you unload and get to your stall. Get the stall mats. Know what numbers they are starting on for every day. I almost missed my 2nd run cuz I thought they started on different numbers. Made it over there in time to lope a few circles and run.
We had so much fun. Went to the Cowboy Museum and spent about half a day in there. Went to a few other places. Just made a nice week out of it.

I wanted to go back this year, but I'm having to retire my good horse, and I dont feel 100% confident spending that kind of money on entering the one I am running now. Go and have fun. Its well ran, friendly staff and if you are lucky and make it back to the short go, pays well.

It is a very long walk from the RV lot to the stalls, I'd take a scooter or get the golf cart for your shins sake.  Do not leave your vehicle running while you aren't in it for any reason & keep stuff locked up!  You hear of a lot of trucks and or trailers getting stolen from the fair grounds a lot.

If it is cost-effective for you, I would personally get a tack stall even with one horse. You can leave everything in there that you need, unload everything you would need to run when you are unloading your horse stuff, and call it good. If your husband isn't entered, I would just drive a vehicle back and forth from the RV park and stalls. You can usually pull right up to your stalls, but you can't leave a vehicle parked there for a while but not all day long. He could drop you off at your horses and can go park in a regular spot. Earlier you feed in the morning it is easier to get a round pen to turn your horse out for a bit and there are a lot fewer people out and about. I'm not talking crack of dawn but about 7:30ish. This is pretty much what I do when I go by myself, and this way, I can lock stuff in my truck instead of trying to find something to do with it on a golf cart. RENT/BUY THE STALL MATS. They are both about the same mat (I can't remember the price), but after three-four days, I know when I leave and get everything packed, pulling up those nasty mats is not something I want to do. Take extras shavings if you have room. Once you are in OKC, they are tough to come by.

Have a great time!

Oh gosh, thank you everyone for the tips!  You are giving me things to think about that I did not know.  I've been going back and forth on the stall mats.  I've been told to take bags of top soil or garden soil, put that down first then lots of wood chips.  But bringing in bags of soil seems pretty labor intense for a stall.  Plus I'm not sure how muddy it would make things once there is urine in it.

I didn't know about turn out time for the round pens.  My horse is not used to being stalled so I figured I would take her out for walks throughout the day.  But she loves to roll in soft dirt so the round pen sounds like a great idea.

Thanks again everyone!  I'm super excited to go next month!

Man the soil would really make a nasty mess from all the peeing,  my horses always layed down in the shavings so the soil would be a big no in my opinon. I always just took as many sacks of shavings I could fit in my trailer or truck, and the tack stall is a must, I used the tack stall for my shavings and feed, hay, pooper scooper and my muck bucket on a cart in there, but I never left my saddle in there it always stayed in my trailer. Just lock it all up to be on the safe side. I would also bring a fan for your horse, sometimes it can get really stuffy and hot in those barns, just make sure your horse cant reach the cords on the fan if you use one.

We stayed in a hotel, so really have no idea about the RV-lot. But we did get a tack stall and it is worth it!

We had a cooler in there with cold water/drinks. Had a chain and a lock for the tack stall. It gives you a place to sit for a moment. I like to hang out with my boy for a while. ( We actually had a couple of chairs in there also.

We did rent mats and took them with us. You can call the local feed store for shavings/ pellet bedding, they delivered to  our stalls.

Make sure you have enough time to check in and get your horse numbered.

We took the horses out a bunch of times to just walk them around and get some air, it gets stuffy and some people really don't clean their stalls so the ammonia can get very fragrant! Unfortunately....

Yes it will be a lot of walking! But most of all, just enjoy!!!

Dont leave your wallet or purse out in the open in your truck. Things will get broken into if they see something.

Tack stalls are very handy. Sometimes the water can smell like city water so if you have a picky drinker bring electrolytes or peppermints.

Ok, you all convinced me, stall mat has been rented. We are saving money by staying in the trailer so I figured do myself and my horse a favor.   We are not getting a tack room, however we requested to be stalled by others from our area and they are getting a tack stall.  Maybe we can all share the muck barrel and poop fork.  I'm taking a couple of empty feed bags with me in case I need to use those to transport hay from the trailer.  I doubt I use them but just in case it's storming or the wind is blowing.  Who knows what they might be used for.  I've heard several times to make sure I know the draw and where they are starting.  I'll have to make sure I'm super organized and paying attention.  I'm glad my husband is going, he's always really positive and helpful..  It sounds like we'll have a great experience!

I usually take a bag of PDZ stall refresher with me -- great to have when your horse is stalled more than a day or two.  It helps with the amonia.

Also, having a tack stall is nice, but I do not leave anything of value in it -- it's great for feed, hay, etc. The only way I leave anything else is if I do the entire stall drape thing with a top (an EZ up tent) and, of course, a chain and lock.  Use a combination lock.

I provide two buckets of water in the stall for each horse.  If I set up a cross-tie in the aisle for saddling up, I place some cheap mats in the aisle for my horse to stand on while I'm grooming and saddling.  Anything you do to reduce the time they (and you) spend standing on a hard surface helps.

RV spots fill up very quickly.  A good portion of them will be gone shortly after arrival opens up at midnight on Tuesday. We do not rent stall mats.  Instead we put down 5 bags of pelleted bedding down to form a base and than put 3 or 5 bags of fluffy shavings on top.  The pelleted bedding packs on the bottom and keeps them up off the asphalt.  Tack stall will make things easier.  As a senior citizen with some knee issues, the golf cart is essential to me.  Be sure to take fans for horses because it can get pretty warm in the barns.  Fans also help dissipate the ammonia smell which happens when that many horses are stalled.  We also take ag wash to spray down stalls before putting horses in.
