Yes there is a really nice article with the own stories and quotes from Sarah Gropper, Bill Myers, the Merrills, Lainee Sampson to name a few. |

Really? It was all over the news.....the fact that it was a serious freezing storm too early in the year for the cattle and horses to even have winter coats so they froze, suffocated, and drowned |

It happened on Oct 3rd. The week prior it was still in the 70's and 80's. Then you get 2 inches of rain that turns to ice and then snow and on top of that winds in excess of 60 - 70 mph. Horses and cattle didn't have winter hair yet. Blizzards up here are brutal and this one hit when Mother Nature hadn't prepared the animals yet. Even 2 weeks would have made a hell of a difference. So not only are the cattle dead but the calves at their side and also remember that those cattle were bred back for next year. |

Location: Montana | Good for BHN. I've been so frustrated at the lack of national coverage. I'm going to renew my long-lapsed subscription because of this - so thanks for mentioning it here.
That storm would have been devastating in January . . . but in early October it was just unthinkable. I was thinking about a quick drive down to Rapid City the day before it hit so I was looking at the forecast. I thought it might be mildly annoying to drive down so I didn't. That's how bad the forecast under-estimated the storm.
Don't pick on someone for asking why it was so bad. Pick on the national news people who acted like it didn't happen! |

Location: Wyoming | My husband just hauled 3 loads of hay from a ranch near Buffalo SD where the rancher was selling his hay because he lost 85 percent of his herd mostly cows he had over 20 bulls. This was heartbreaking. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | I'm in Florida and I read about the storm on BHW. I emailed my local news station on FB about why they had not covered it. There lame answer was they only cover 'local' events and that the storm was aired on national tv. What a crock...the next day they were showing some lame goofy news out in California. I did not know that Fla and Ca were connected! |

The main thing is that it came at a very freak time of the year. If it had happened a month later things would have turned out much differently. It happened when most ranchers were just getting ready to ship. Some people were days (some even hours) away from shipping when it hit and lost nearly their entire calf crop. Livestock were still out on summer pasture. And did not have their winter coats grown in yet. Summer pasture typically does not have the protection from the elements that winter pasture has for livestock. It was 80 degrees a couple of days before the storm hit. The trees still had green leaves on them and there hadn't even been a killing frost yet. The system started out a cold rain and when the winds picked up, it turned to more snow than the weather people could ever predict. These are just a few of the many factors why this was more devastating than a normal winter storm. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | I should also add that it dumped 3 and 4 FEET of snow on most of this area. Snow is the norm up here and most winters we get 50-100" of snow but when you get that much that fast it suffocates animals and/or when they try to move in it, its no different than on a human, their hearts give out. RWR I'm sorry your news didn't cover this historic but horrific event. There were so many people talking about it on BHW I just assumed everyone knew about it. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | Not to mention the government shutdown a day or two prior to the storm...NOAA was down so I'm sure that had an effect on how accurate weather forcasting was (or not) at the time. |
